I once worked at a corporate campus that doubled the price of soda in the vending machines to make more money.
I also once worked at a campus that had free energy drinks, soda, and snacks. The bump in productivity vastly outweighed the cost.
It seems like such a no brainer to me. I’m infinitely more likely to work overtime if there’s sandwiches in the break room and I don’t have to leave out of hunger. I would think that’s common sense, but CEOs are stupid I guess.
CEOs are oft oblivious, at least to this level of thing. Managers are the stupid ones. Coming up with ideas to actually improve productivity requires paying attention, getting involved, earning your employees' trust, and engaging in critical systemic thinking. Cancelling the vending contract that fills the coffee machine costs nothing, not even mental effort.
I would be so much more productive if we wore alligator hats around here
