Plenty of dogs I know would happily chase and harass a cat, so I'm inclined to think that it's more likely that the dog deserved it than not...

Dogs and cats communicate very differently. And cats sure as hell are not prey animals to be trifled with.
I’m pretty sure an eagle could best a cat in a fight, but they hold their own against many dogs.
- Pound for pound, cats are way more dangerous in a fight than dogs. It's just that cats are usually ~1/3 the weight of the dog that also lives in the house.
A dog that is scared of the cat keeps a cat safe
- A cat that is not afraid of a dog is soon coyote poop in my area.

Most medium sized dogs could easily kill a cat but they simply dont want to. They just wanna be frens :)

Sounds like cat to me. They have two modes, attack everything, or run away. Also, when they are with their peeps, cuddle machine, but only with their peeps. The other two modes still apply as well. At all times they are in observe and report surveillance mode.

My black cat tries to be friend with butterflies. Probably not a void thing.

My cat is 18 and the other day he tried to attack a dog that is at least 4 times his weight. Keep in mind his top speed is typically very very very slow. But I’ve never seen him move as fast as when he tried to jump on this dog.
