The best way to learn what happened is to talk with the person who did it, rather than relyingely upon hindsight.
/uj I have had my own experience with the police that have had to report someone. I have had this happen to me and my partner and it was never a "one out of many cases". This happened at the local police station at work, and we were trying to figure out how to handle the situation and it turned into a bunch of cops trying to talk to us without our consent and asking us for our medical records. I can't even remember if I saw this happen or if it was a different cop and the one that was yelling at us was the one who was supposed to be helping us and he was literally yelling at us. He had a badge with "MTF" and said he was "supportive" of us being trans and then said something like "what if he thinks you are a guy? He can always tell" I've seen him try to get people to leave a woman's house for her and he's been doing it for months now, and I think it's still not ok for a trans person to just have a partner who has a different pronouns. It's really sad when the police try to help and it makes it a lot harder to talk to them about stuff.
This happened at the same police station, the one that patrols the whole city. They just don't give a shit, and if you want to report a crime or something, just say it to the cop who is around and they won't care about your "supportive" partner. You might be right about some police departments not giving a shit, but it's still not common and there are a ton of departments.
