The book was written as a sort-of sequel/prequel to 'Namaste', so there are no real new scenes or developments between them; they're just some interls where we see how things went down after Namastre's death at the hands "the bad guys". The story takes place during what appears now be one hundred years from today: when humans were still quite primitive - yet very powerful indeed ! And that power had its uses...
