What are some goods that you wish were manufactured in Europe?

GPUs designed by european companies would be really nice to have made on the continent!

All products whose production cannot be guaranteed under fair and humane socio-economic conditions and all products whose procurement outside Europe poses a risk to life and health - e.g. prescription drugs
I guess with electronics there is a lot to be desired. GPUs, CPUs other chips and a lot of components. Entire smartphones and laptops.

Though what I'd really like to see "manufactured" in Europe is a big internet platform. Something like WhatsApp, Instagram or YouTube, TikTok or whatever.

  The Fairphone is a really nice project. It's designed by a Dutch company. According to what I can find on the internet, it's manufactured with ethical standards by Hi-P International Limited in China. And the System on Chip comes from an US-company (Qualcomm), those are produced by TSMC in Taiwan.
- Mastodon? It's European-owned.
  
  Diaspora is also pretty good.
- Yeah, cheap microchips for microcontrollers like the Raspberry Pi Pico and SOC computers and chips for memory storage.
  
  If there is ever a WWIII or a global economic collapse, which climate change will make increasingly likely, a lack of the basics for IT will completely collapse Europe.
  
  There is STmicroelectronics manufacturing chips in Europe.
  
  ... and most of the world. I guess that's the reason why we still have Taiwan as a country.
Medicine, Electronics, clothing
- astrazeneca and novonordisk both have massive european factories, so we can at least do medicine

  Different Pharmaceuticals require very different manufacturing processes, QC lab equipment and validations and so on. Novo Nordisk can't just start producing ADHD medicine or Paracetamol for instance without significant investments and changes. It's a long and complicated process to get the license to produce. Not impossible, but I just wanted to highlight that it's not so easy to just start producing something entirely new even though it's still pharmaceuticals.

ICs, passives, and transistors. /thread.

There are 2 big IC designers in Europe: Nordic and ST, but I believe all of their production is in China and Taiwan. If trade crashes, we have the IP, but no way to manufacture at scale. IMEC here in Belgium has 4 small fabs, but there isn't that much else and the workforce is expensive as fuck which is why they do research IC's almost exclusively.

We have a lot of camera IC designing in the EU also, but they are almost all fabless. Luckily we have ASML who know everything technical about IC manufacturing.

We have less knowledge on how to actually mass produce ICs anymore efficiently even though we create all of the tools and methods here because everything is done in the east that will see any volume production. PCBs and assembly are already 2-3x as expensive.

In my opinion, we need huge subsidies to get component and IC scale fabs here.
- ST operates its own fabs, they are located mostly in Europe.
