When the premium for double the memory is so small it doesn't make sense to buy the 8gb model. I'd bet it is 90% forward looking gamers to 10% stable diff/AI.
I would guess it's mostly about gaming. 8GB was great 10 years ago. It's not really enough now, especially if you're running more than 1080p. $400 for an 8GB card is also a really bad deal.
