while I like sambal sometimes I feel like there always is something I'm missing. it often has this penetrating taste of garlic that just doesn't go well with the flavor of the chilies. Sriracha actually has the same issue for me.

Sometimes people also use tomato, and may cook some of the ingredients other than the shrimp paste as well. Also herbs and spices like lemongrass, ginger, etc depending on specific tastes. It's supposed to be quite a bright flavor.
