The Justice Department had demanded that James E. Ryan step down in order to help resolve a civil rights investigation into the school.
By "civil rights investigation" they mean he was willing to admit nonwhite students.

Yep. I do take comfort in the fact that the student protesters were heard to chant, “Death to tyrants." You can bet that will turn Trump up to 11even though it is the state motto, more or less.
Sic semper tyrannis more accurately translates to "thus always to tyrants." Since it supposedly originates with a statement by Brutus over Ceasar's fresh corpse, the meaning is quite clear. I'll give the students an A- on the translation. I mean, hey, who takes Latin language classes these days anyway?
