The Canadian government is aware of the death of a Canadian citizen in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody and is “urgently seeking more information from U.S. officials.”
So we're now at the stage where people risk being arrested without a charge by goons unwilling to properly identify themselves and then being killed because of that?
The current situation in the United States is eerily similar to 1930s Germany in my opinion. We're probably just a few months away from political opponents being picked up on made up charges or even disappeared straight up.
You can really see how Hitler happened when there was no free information flow like the internet. Even now people are confused but imagine if all you had is literally just hearsay and the newspaper says nothing bad is happening and there are no goons kidnapping people.
I even understand much better why Germany fell prey to fascism at the time. Germans had gone through two million KIA, major territorial losses, a once in a century pandemic, hyperinflation, crippling economic war reparations and a once in a century economic depression in the span of less than twenty years and yet only a third of them voted for the fascist in the last free election. Keep in mind that democratic tradition was not firmly established in Germany by that point. Meanwhile US citizens have gone through a major economic crisis in 2008/9, a major pandemic and and increase in egg prices and suddenly more than half of voters there chose the fascist.
This person was actually convicted of trafficking opioids in an actual court in 2022, so it's not a random Canadian plucked off the street.
That being said prisoners do still deserve basic human rights like healthcare and with people being arrested without due process now, just coming to the US shouldn't mean risking your life.
Time to call our citizens back and close the border, or at the very least mark the US as one of the most dangerous, if not most dangerous, places in the world. Cancel that deal they just signed with that scammy US co (saw the article earlier but forget where it was).
Border walls are pointless (look at the southern US border they climb over, through, and even under), but a beautiful hedge running from coast to coast would be nice
My parents have dual Canadian and US citizenship I'm desperately trying to get them to back here to Canada. I'm really worried about them right now because any day now ICE or someone could tell them their US Citizenship means jack shit.
Can't we like, globally cut off any and all ties with the US and leave them to fester in their own hellhole? Hell, we'll build the walls AND pay for them!
