That's exactly what it is. It's like the republican party's platform of racism has become it's sole defining characteristic that underpins all of it's policy.
They literally said this was their strategy back in the 80s when they saw the writing on the wall for their incredibly unpopular platform. The platform is now worse, but repugnantcons never talk about it. Just inflammatory racism and divisiveness, the media gobbles it up and gives them free press and sanewashing, and we get dragged deeper into an authoritarian redneck regime as a result. It’s honestly horrifying.
I hitchhiked around the southern US for a while in the late ‘80s and, as a small blonde-haired, blue-eyed white girl, you wouldn’t believe what southern white guys were willing to say in front of me. It was appalling.
Ever since trump started gaining popularity, it’s all been very familiar. ‘Oh, you call everyone you don’t like racist’ – no, I call racists racist, and if this offends you, fucking check yourself. It’s not hard to respect people, and it’s not hard to not be a bigot. Just respect people, simple as.
Is it hurting you that people are gay? No. Does it impact your life that someone you’ve not even met is trans? No. So shut the fuck up and mind your own. Lord knows your own house could use some intellectual maintenance. Maybe attend to that before throwing shit at others.
This is how America looks at every situation, like it's a one problem solution. If the only tool you have(or use) is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.
I worry that it kind of green lights racism and corruption throughout the community.
For example, even a perfectly legal and legitimate migrant family can be threatened with being reported to ICE. Even if you don't end up getting sent to the gulag, it's still just a gang of thugs come to terrify your partner and children.
It amazes me that so many people are just choosing not to see this. They've always felt that they ought to be entitled to preferential treatment at the expense of less fortunate people and this platform is providing that.
Yeah. Previous Democratic presidents deported more people than Trump, and yet Republicans see Trump as better at handling immigration. US conservatives simply want to see someone rough handling immigrants.
I grew up in deep Republican country and he’s 100% right. These are the same people I saw telling other kids their age they were going to get them deported and that they’re not allowed to come to school. They’re the same people that were leaving KKK graffiti around town. Just absolutely fueled by hate handed down, generation to generation, from angry slavers.
Learned many things that made me respect Samuel L. Jackson very much. Loved him standing up for Brie Larson. Had no idea he was an usher for MLK Jr's funeral.
