I've seen a lot of posts on Lemmy today arguing that Greta Thunberg is privileged, self-obsessed or self-promoting, that her actions are merely symbolic and useless, etc. I have to wonder whether these are part of a coordinated campaign. I hope we can all recognize someone who cares enough to put themselves in danger for the sake of others.
I can’t remember the exact quote from Herman Hesse but it’s something like, “A person cannot conceive a quality in another that they don’t also have within themselves.” The reason so many people question Greta’s motives is because they are inherently selfish and Greta’s altruism is impossible for them to understand. The only reason they’d do anything that appears to be heroic is for their own ego or self serving means.
Greta literally risked her life for this. Israel killed ten people on the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla. And Israel bombed the most recent one.
The comments about Greta doing this for self promotion are pure Zionist bots. It is the de-facto Zionist retort after illegally kidnapping Greta in international waters. And the statement has very clearly been communicated from the top down at the Israeli Hasbara department.

Yeah, centrists hate anyone that makes their genocide look bad.
I take my time to request they explain their entire "argument" until they are so frustrated with their own inaccuracies they decide to stop commenting. Just had some fun with that yesterday. Make it clear to those who come after.
Sone of us are older and take issue with how much attention she is drawing while not really organizing anything. She's a useful figurehead but there are people making her out to be akin to the American civil rights leaders of the past and she's not doing what they did in terms of grassroots organization. She's more Oprah, without the baggage she brings, than MLK.
She's neither the second coming of Christ nor is she a huckster. I think she's a sometimes media darling who does work herself but does not seem to be building a movement but rather shows up to be the face of it.
Huh? She's done nothing but organize grassroot movements and civil disobedience since she was 15? MLK was 28 when he helped form the SCLC, Greta is 22 - give her some credit.
Personally I don’t feel one can argue that she isn’t doing good but I do feel there is an argument to be had that the way she goes about it can do more harm than good and even border on immature. Especially given that the people who most need to hear her message are those who are most likely to ignore her due to her age and station.
Greta thunberg is braver than I'll ever be and if she ran for elections I would vote for her in a heartbeat and if an armed insurrection ever occurred that she supports ever happens I would die for the cause without a second thought
