Wow, that's courageous, well done. I'm envious. I'm still battling with the sunk-cost fallacy mostly related to my youtube account. My gmail just redirects to my new mail address currently, so that's sort of sorted until I've gone through 20 years of created accounts that are linked to it.
That's part of my issue. I'm a former content creator and still want to keep the videos from those years up and available. I don't really use subscriptions or anything though so I can browse without an account.
I closed out 2 google accounts entirely this month, and just about finishing migrating various accounts to use my new tuta email. I'm still keeping my last 2 accounts up just in case (I've had cases where very important emails sent from tuta were getting filtered by the recipient, but gmail seemed fine). But on those two accounts, I've totally purged all existing emails, emptied Drive, etc. I'm also on Fi as it's basically the only remotely affordable mobile plan around here. So I'm about as distanced as I can get at this point, but not entirely off yet.
Congratulations! That must have been quite the journey. I am getting close, but I still need to figure out a calendar service that I am happy with that works with my family and it will be hard curb my YouTube addiction.
I recently did this for one of my accounts. It was quite a few years old, but it still hurt to remove it. Backed up all old photos and said goodbye. I still have a Gmail account, but I hope to transition fully to Proton soon. Congrats, OP!
I've been gradually working my way towards this. Recently I switched to GrapheneOS and signed up for Tuta mail. Next step is to build a NAS and set up immich.
For those of you still on the journey, know that you can quit individual google services. For example you can quit Gmail, but keep Youtube etc. This would also allow you to keep play store.
Thanks! I have also ditched all Microsoft services as well as windows, I also installed a custom ROM on my phone with no gapps. Every piece of software I use is foss!
The only thing that's stopping me from doing the same are:
some email redirects (for some reason, I can't update the emails on those services)
a shonen jump subscription (for some reason, there is no option to subscribe to them directly so I have to do it through google play store 🙄)
I did move on from Youtube however, by moving my subscriptions to an RSS feed and storing my "watch later" links using Linkding (a bookmark manager). I sort of alluded to this in a recent comment: https://sh.itjust.works/comment/19041626
