The CEO of Meta says "the average American has fewer than three friends, fewer than three people they would consider friends. And the average person has demand for meaningfully more.”
This is honestly one of the more concerning things Meta has come out with in years.
Social media giants have long since moved on from being the go-to companies for information about the public, and are now (with the help of "AI") moving solidly into the realm of injecting ideas into the public. Consider the implications of even 10% of the general public having regular conversations with their MetaFriend. They talk about their hobbies, their needs and wants, and all that data is obviously being collected, but these people have also handed Meta the ability to propose new ideas and change their viewpoint. Their "friend" is now in a position to drag them unknowingly into any political position Meta wants, and they can do this at scale.
That's enough to change public sentiment on nearly every issue. It's enough to sway elections.
It's truly scary. I feel like this would have accelerationist effects.
I wonder if stuff like this could shock a decent chunk of people on the right into realizing who the bad guys are. It should play into anxieties about free speech and brainwashing.
That's not just for internet publications of social media anymore......the headline news on the BBC is literally "Prince Harry says he wants reconciliation but the king refuses to speak to him".
I want an AI that figures out who would be likely to want to hear from me, and prompt me to start a conversation with them. That would be way better than Meta owning an ever increasing share of my attention.
I’m not interested in being friends with or fucking artificial intelligence. I use it to help me solve problems and that’s going to remain the extent of my relationship with it.
I curious about what it means for someone to "have demand for 15 friends", and how one would go about measuring that.
Average is less than 3, ok, clear. Demand is ~15.... I can't make sense of it. Anyone understands what this means? How do I determine my friend demand?
