Meta Reportedly Lays Off At Least 100 Employees From Its VR Division
The layoffs have significantly impacted the team behind a VR fitness app Meta acquired in 2023.
Hopefully they sell off quest so we can maybe get a company not so dead set on invading privacy in the VR market. I swore off Facebook in 2007 due to privacy concerns, and it is unfortunate that they purchased Oculus in 2014 and became the leader in the space. This literally happened just as I had come into a position where I actually had disposable income and was interested in VR.
Valve is allegedly working on a new headset to compete in the wireless VR space. I'm betting that'll be worth it once it releases.
I have a Valve Index and the only way i buy a new headset is with Valve Deckard (or whatever name they chose for their next generation vr). If it never materializes, VR is dead to me because I have zero interest in non linux solutions.
I hope so! Back then, they had their collaboration with HTC. Unfortunately, the performance just didn't justify the cost. I've been interested in VR and AR for quite some time, so I look forward to when the tech is both worth the cost and offered by a company I can at least justify giving my money.
Facebook is both anti-privacy and also doesn’t believe in much moderation, both of which make VR dangerous if an entire family uses it. I don’t believe VR should be something only adults can use, but there needs to be some really good moderation. Otherwise it would just be overrun by sexual predators and edgelords.
That's a good point! There are already issues with their "a.i." implementation, including violations of contracts with celebrities.

I really love my Quest 3 headset, and i think the investments into VR is some of the best money that Facebook has spent... for me as a consumer.
I dont think that the metaverse is worth the electrons used to send it though.
