WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Some artifacts and exhibits are being removed from the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It comes a month after President Trump’s executive order to remove what he calls “improper ideology” from Smithsonian museums. Tourists travel from across the co...
If I'm understanding correctly there's two books being removed. And the Smithsonian is saying the loan agreement with the owner of the books, Rev. Brown, expires in May. So they're returning them to him to rotate in new exhibits per regular operating procedure. If that's true I don't really understand the issue here. Rev. Brown seems to be under the impression that they're removing the items because of Trump's order. But he, at least in this article, doesn't even address the Smithsonian's explanation so I don't really know what's going on here. But it really doesn't seem like this is because of Trump's policy. If it was why would they just be removing these two books and nothing else?
Worse. If I destroy (or remove and hide away) a book, it still exists, as long as there's at least another copy, the manuscript, an editor's digital backup, etc. You cannot copy art. It's never the same exact piece the artist sculpted with their fingers.
I used to roll my eyes at all the "sheeple" comments, but to be honest, looking at what's happening in the US recently and seeing how many people just capitulate to the bullies I'm not so sure anymore... It's just really sad and depressing :(
You forget that like 40% of people in the US are fine with this. It's more depressing when you realize the reason people aren't fighting back is because they're fine with it.
All of the museum people (curators, assistant curators, curatorial assistants, devo, registration, facilities generally make starvation wages. They tend to be deeply proud of their work and the contant of the museum and thats why they work there. So this nonsense has to be absolutely gutting everyone there, and probably across the Smithsonian museums in general. I feel really bad for them along with all the African Americans being attacked by this.
This action takes all of their work through their career and kind of lights it all on fire, for no reason but that Trump is angry at the world because he has a tiny penis and knows that everyone he knows cant stand him.
Also the examples listed here the artifacts are going back to their original owners who have already protected these items for years or decades. I think the curators and other museum people would rather have the items in safe private hands instead of unsafe public hands.
It's a really rad building! The Smithsonian is actually a collection of museums scattered around DC. This one in particular was built with all kinds of cultural heritages in mind and a particular focus on African and African Americans (naturally).
I see how you go around on Lemmy saying Twitter-length insult comments on political discussions. An agent of mockery for Putin lovers.
Russia-watcher Catherine Fitzpatrick, who documents Kremlin disinformation for InterpreterMag .com, says just as Moscow uses vague Internet laws to encourage self-censorship, trolls inhibit informed debate by using crude dialogue to change "the climate of discussion." "If you show up at The Washington Post or New Republic sites, where there's an article that's critical of Russia, and you see that there are 200 comments that sound like they were written by 12-year-olds, then you just don't bother to comment," she says. "You don't participate. It's a way of just driving discussion away completely," she adds. "Those kinds of tactics are meant to stop democratic debate, and they work."
The utter destruction of the republic continues apace. Russia's published plan was always to do this US in by inflaming racial tensions. I'd imagine this is just the next step in the playbook.
I shouldve helped in the genocide? So we lost by one vote? Darn I guess this is on me then, although to be fair my state went for harris and we dont use the general vote count for anything, but thats not the point for you is it. Because you arent here with any realistic points.
Funny story, my state was called for Harris before even one vote was reported.
Anyone wanna take bets on whether the artifacts and exhibts are being properly taken off display and stored, or if they are just being tossed in a dumpster somewhere...
You guys consider reading the article instead of guessing? The article is about one book and one bible being returned to one person.
The Smithsonian responded to DC News Now, stating:
The Bible and book belong to Rev. Brown of San Francisco who generously loaned them to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture for an exhibition. The loan agreement has expired and the items are being returned (in May) to the owner which is standard museum practice for any loan. The curator called and wrote to Rev. Brown.
None of these objects are leaving the Smithsonian.”
~46% of Americans are republican and strongly support trump no matter what he does-- even now his support amongst republicans is extremely high around social and wedge issues.
~45% of Americans are democrats, and of those, ~55% are in support of progressive causes, while the remainder ~45% of dems are centrist or lean conservative-- mainly concerned with preserving their current rights and daily way of life. Although they are a minority of dems, the non-progressives control the party's legal apparatus so the democrats are a house very dvided so are unlikely to be winning any elections anytime soon. The centrists have proven that they'd much rather lose than let the progressives take control of the party. The math shows us that just 24.75% of the country is progressive-- these are people who'd care to keep the black history museum open.
The independents (not dem or republican) usually fall between republican and Dem centrist, so they likely don't accrue to progressive numbers in this case.
So probably just over 75% of Americans want this or dont care to fight this. You can only trust 1 in 4 Americans to be against this on principle. And those 1 in 4 dont have a political party that will loyally rally around their causes-- especially this far from an election.
A lot of us dont want any of this, but also arent either the autocrat in charge, the billionaires who bought him, nor are we the military that can stop him.
As much as a lot of us would stop this immediately if we could, we also dont need to let Trump have his Tienammen Square moment. The military should have removed him the moment it was clear that he is hell bent on destabilizing our country, our region, and the world at large.
