How to make magazines appear in search?
Having an issue I hope someone can help with:
I created a magazine (https://kbin.social/m/Frenchies) but when I use the Kbin search at the top of the page, it does not appear? I've tried various search terms, but neither the magazine nor the post I made in it show up. I have 2 subscribers, but I think they came from direct links I posted in other's comments.
Do I need to somehow make the magazine public? Or index-able? I added Tags in the tag section of the magazine. Hoping someone can help out, I really need my dog picture fix!
I just tried it myself on kbin.social and you are right. If you use the search at the top of the page then it will not find your magazine. If you use the search that is part of the magazine page, then it will find your magazine.
I think your question is specifically about the search at the top of the page, the global search, correct? If so, yeah, it doesn't appear to find magazines. I don't know if it's by design or a defect.
I also tried finding your new magazine from two other KBIN instances, https://feddit.online and https://fedia.io and in both instances, using either the search at the top of the page or the search on the magazine page, I was not able to see your new magazine if I didn't add @kbin.social to the name (if I already knew where it was). And I don't think they will ever be able to because I have been unable to find any magazines that exist external to any KBIN instance that is not already added to the local server unless I first visited the instance where it exists so I can give the domain name as well with the exact name in the search.
It sucks. If I want to see, for example, all magazines about Linux across KBIN and Lemmy, either because it's part of the magazine name, or it's in a magazine's description, I don't see how to do this.
This is a bummer. When someone gets onto a new instance and they want to subscribe to an interesting magazine, I don't see any way that they can find them outside of their local instance.
I'd love to be wrong about this. Has anyone had a different experience?
I know this is kind of off topic but it relates so I've extended the conversation.
Currently it's more work probably than it should be to do this, so for newer people, it's recommended they stay on large instances like lemmy.world or kbin.social to have the communities searchable.
If you're on a newer server, you can add the community you want.
Click Search (the site, not search for the community)
enter the whole url of the community you wanted - eg. https://kbin.social/m/Frenchies
Click enter and wait for a bit until it's able to find the community and you can hit subscribe button.It's easy to do, but nothing on the UI helps you find the communities without extra knowledge, so if you're newer, it's a better experience to stay on the larger servers
Your sub is searchable through https://kbin.social/magazines . It probably took a second for the database to update.
It is a week old magazine at this point. The issue appears to be that i was not switching to magazine search instead of whatever the search defaults to (threads?). Seems like something worth improving on, if I'm searching for a topic i would obviously be interested in magazines on that topic too, not just posts that mention the topic. Thank you for the reply!
I see. The search function is for searching specific terms over every thread. But I agree that there should be more options to filter your search. Feel free to make a suggestion here.
