Hi, I am able to access feddit.org from my wifi, but connecting via my mobile data fails. Is feddit.org doing geoblocking or blocking certain IP ranges? It's negatively impacting the lemmy experience for me hugely, as a lot of images in my feed do not load, and I imagine it's affecting others as well.
we're currently working on migrating to new infrastructure (same hardware, new deployment setup) that will allow us to separate IP blocks for feddit.org from those used by the rest of the fediverse foundation.
we currently have certain bad reputation and some asian networks blocked due to a large amount of malicious traffic, which is a major problem for other fediverse foundation services, partially resulting in service outages before these blocks were implemented.
unfortunately this will still take some time for the migration to be completed.
if you are being blocked while using a residential or mobile internet connection outside of asia or a static non-VPN IP please let us know your IP and we will review your individual case. you can send us an email to admin @ domain of this instance or send a lemmy pm to @BurningTurtle@feddit.org or me and we'll forward this internally.
Thanks! I don't think there's much that can be done as my Asian mobile IP is dynamic. Hopefully the migration happens soon and resolves the issue. Is there an expected timeline?
Fediverse Foundation / Feddit is blocking most asian IP ranges due to too much bad traffic. Since the fediverse is, well, federated, just go to another instance and subscribe to the communities here from there
It's not about subscribing to communities, though. Any pictures hosted on their servers will fail to load, leading to a negative experience of lemmy for anybody in the affected region. They're basically impacting how 30% of the world experiences lemmy, for the worse.
I think it is due to bad traffic from Asian IPs. The number of IPs that want to access German speaking feddit.org from Malaysia against malicious IPs are in such a high ratio that this is the easiest way for protection. However, you should be able to access feddit.org through any other instance. So if you stay in Malaysia, just use sh.itjust.works, lemm.ee or something similar to browse feddit!
As you'll note, I AM using a SJW account. That does not prevent me from being impacted. Images are not copied to federated servers. Feddit.org is the default image host for their users, but this means that any user in Asia is unable to view the images they upload. This leads to significant parts of the feed showing 'failed to load image' placeholders.
I also question the wisdom of a decision that makes it impossible to host any instance in Asia. Are we just preemptively deciding Asians should never be allowed to host an instance? Not to mention screwing over the existing instances hosted in Asia.
I understand the stated reasoning behind the decision, but I'm here to inform the admins that this is having unintended (I hope) side effects that will impact the entire fediverse.
I see your point, I was just reciting the reasons fron the German post someone else linked. I didn't know about the images, and that is indeed a problem. Maybe one of the feddit.org Admins can give us some more info on this?
I am also affected by this here in Thailand and seeing the same Problems with media hosted by feddit.org not loading, even when accessing a post from another instance. Since then i had to create this alternative account, as it was not feasible to use a vpn constantly.
While its inconvenient, i can understand why the geoblocking was done in the first place as an easy solution.
Here in Thailand we are left with only 2 Big Telco Providers, both as far as i know, using CGNAT and not IPv6.
So at no point my connection will be from an IP Range that is not suspicious.
Like what? If you have an idea... There's been other people posting about the same thing with voyager, but the issue hasn't been fixed. It's been about a month so far.
