Go on... I don't like much all these populists/narcissistic/nationalists but first Poland's Lech Kaczyński dies in a airplane accident, Slovakia's Robert Fico gets shot, Romania's election gets cancelled and then the front runner banned, and then the second banned too (have any evidence been published?!). Duterte gets arrested in Manila and sent to the Hague (Philippines is not a ICC signatory).. I remember McAfee and Epstein suicides but miraculously cameras in prisons failed to work... and today in Spain the records from a spy working for the CIA that spied on Assange gets all deleted.... while in Spanish top authorities custody!
I am not fan of these eccentric people, but you have to give it to them there is something in our "law and order" system that is "odd" to say the least... and us blindly clapping is worrisome.
Worry less about what Kremlin wants and what million of French now, like millions of Romanians, feel completely disfranchised. I don't know if Le Pen's ruling holds any water, (I know Romania's does not!), but I see corruption cases left and right everywhere but the only candidates that are suspended are the same type... anti-establishment ones with a high degree of making an impact.
As I mentioned in other posts, I detest the Le Pens (father and daughter), but not their ability to listen to their voters.
They are not anti-estabilishment. They are pro russian/soviet estabilishment. They are trying to build soviet type dictatorships whit Putin's help and guidance, using his propaganda talking points, propaganda distribution machine and doing his bidding.
Also, they are not listening to voters at all. They are propagating and instilling fear and hatred in the voters. Because fearful and hateful people can be easily manipulated. So they are manufacturing this voter base, by spreading an unimaginable amount of fake news and propaganda, until the more susceptible layer of society gets brainwashed into their rhetoric.
And once they are brainwashed and terrorized by imaginary monsters and shadow figures (Soros, jews, migrants etc.), they are locked in. They are in a cult. Their mind is fully closed down, their vote locked in to the far-right Putinist. Because at this point all contradictory information and evidence against their world view is just noise to them. They are not listening to any outside info at that point. Their brain is just constantly looping around the terror that they are living in: Soros, deep state, migrants, LGBTQ - all out to get them.
And their only saviour, the night in shining armour? The far-right extremist who promises to save them for all these imaginary monsters and phobias. Le-Pen, Farage, Fico etc.
And if they gain enough power to realize their authoritarian agenda, then your country is gone and flushed down they toilet.
I know what I'm talking about, greetings from Hungary.
Judges handed Le Pen a five-year ban on running for public office with the added provision that it would take immediate effect. It will apply even if she appeals.
Le Pen, who left the court before the hearing had finished, was also sentenced to four years in prison with two years suspended and and the other two to be served outside jail with an electronic bracelet. She was handed a €100,000 (£84,000) fine. Neither the prison penalty nor fine will be applied until her appeals are exhausted.
Any French commenters able to contextualize this news for the rest of us? Le Pen's party has been gaining popularity in recent years, if I recall correctly. How is this likely to impact them? Are they organized enough to continue on without her, or is this likely to seriously hurt their electoral chances?
It's always good to see a fascist lose but I'm not tuned in enough to French politics to know the full significance of this.
If by recent years, you mean the last 20+ years, sure.
I'm not sure it truly hurts the Front National chances in 2027, however, the expected heir, Jordan Bardella, is not nearly as smart as MLP, so maybe it will make enough of a difference if it ends up a close thing. I would say the political situation in France is pretty volatile, hard to say what it will look like in 2 years.
There is also the possibility (slim, imho, but still real) of MLP either winning her appeal (which should take place sometime in 2026), or at least having the ineligibility sanction removed, which I think would give her a huge boost.
Financing parties is complicated by design as the French system tries to avoid interference from companies or wealthy individuals. RN was struggling because they are greedy incompetent pigs. So they decided collectively to use the money dedicated by the European parliament to recruit parliamentary assistants to finance the party's activities. And they got caught.
This won't affect their chances as racist voters will still vote for racist candidates, whatever the candidate. We will just have a new racist guy (Jordan Bardella) instead of Le Pen.
It's not so recent. Her father was in the second turn of the presidential election in 2002.
Still the RN (rassemblement National) far right party is bigger than ever with 123 elected member in the National assembly (out of 575).
They don't really have a back up. She took the reigns from her father, she is the name of the party.
The second (Bardella) is young and inapt, and he also has some problem with the law (fake work)
Seems like a light punishment that will allow her to run after the 4 year ban runs out. And conservatives love the persecution angle and having victim complexes. Corruption should bar you from a government position forever.
