Mikal Gilmore writes about his dive into heavy metal music at age 73, following the 2024 election of Donald Trump
Putting the 73 year old bit in the title so it’s easy to find dupes, but it’s a rather good article about metal subgenres, primarily death/black, with shoutouts to post, blackgaze and more.
It actually reminds me of my recent discovery of a genre that I had little use for.
Jazz.
I had never liked much jazz, unless you consider crooners a branch of jazz. It just never gelled for me, or never made that magic switch in my head click.
And then I heard some Abraham Loboriel. And then some Mamogi.
This led me to discover that most of what I didn't like about jazz was brass. I had never been exposed to jazz that wasn't brass heavy in any sustained way. I'm still not a fan of brass focused jazz at all.
But place Loboriel flicked that switch in my head, I've been slowly going backwards through the various sub genres of jazz and finding that I wish I had known someone years ago that could have helped me discover the stuff I do like.
I don't know for sure that a guided tour would have worked back then. Sometimes you have to be in the right frame of mind, at the right time, for something to click. I know I was in my teens before bluegrass clicked a little, and in my late twenties before it really hit in a way that let me enjoy damn near anything bluegrass rather than being picky.
But I wish I had had the chance. I always kick myself a little over missed opportunities for joy in music that come from that switch not working sooner.
So, I'm happy as hell for the writer. Finding something that gives you joy like that is always a wonderful thing \m/
Jazz - very cool! Glad you found stuff you like in there! It’s funny, I probably like 90% of post-rock, 70% of prog-rock and 50% of mathrock, but Jazz is VERY dependent on style.
And now I’ll have to go try those bands you mentioned.
