I mention the extension in particular because it is easy to set up use for those of us who don't want to dig through browser settings to set up a redirect rule

For a more general solution, that will redirect you from anywhere to anywhere else, check out Redirector. Being more flexible does make it a bit more fiddly, of course.
Someone should make an extension that automatically redirect you too cached copy of Reddit in the wayback machine. That way, you still not visiting Reddit, while still getting a useful result when you click a Reddit link from Google search.
