Hello from Lemmy! How’s life there over on the other side on Kbin?

Hello from Lemmy! How’s life there over on the other side on Kbin?
Fediverse life is prospering and I already feel like my doom scrolling days are behind me :)
Mine are just re-beginning
Oh yeah, that reminds me, I gotta go walk the robot dog
I can't wait until we live in a future where robot dogs can walk themselves.
That's lemmygrad if they could just try one more time
We livin in 3023 here on the fediverse
We got flying cars
I know this image is the go-to mock up for an idealized future, but the more I look at it the sillier it gets.
Life has been good since the federation spun back up. I love that our little community isn't restricted to just the content we produce on our own.
@tauonite hello from mastodon 👋 message received!
@governa @tauonite It never ceases to amaze me that all these wildly different Fediverse platforms can seamlessly communicate like this.
@DamnCatOnMyDesk @tauonite it's wonderful isn't it? almost magical :ablobcatrainbow: :fediverse:
reminds me of Nokia's iconic tagline: "connecting people".
We've got hookers and beer over here. What do you have?
I think they have access to our federated hookers and federated beers.
Not bad, not bad. Taking a break from designing a little crochet dice bag I'm gifting someone. Really shouldn't be bragging about literally a bag, but multicolored swirly patterns require the most basic math skills and math is hard when you've got terminal brain damage
As a knitter, making anything with only one needle seems like rocket science.
Right? I started out knitting and I have to say it's kinda more fun for me. It's very zen, even though knitting patterns tend to be more complex. But it's harder to shape things that way and to make features quite as defined, so WAY more stuffed animals, etc. are crochet and that's what I wanted to make. I was forced to learn. I did not choose this life.
99% of either one is just muscle memory. It's frustrating and I'm not gonna pretend like my first crochet project didn't end in 3 do-overs and at least one frustrated crying fit. But it's really a question of sheer stubbornness while you get the motions down
Ooh would love to see the bag when its done! A friend crochets and has made some really cool stuff
It's still going to be a couple days, I think. I'm caught between a couple ideas and the indecision is really driving me nuts. But I promise I'll keep you in mind when it's done :D
Not gonna lie, it's pretty awesome over here.
Now that things have settled down a bit, the mobile site for kbin is pretty quick and there's a lot of new content. I'm sure the updates will keep coming and it should be interesting to see how it develops over the next months.
I pinned the mobile site to my homepage in the iPhone, and it feels like an actual app.
The icon is on the spot that was vacated by Reddit, which has now moved to the container where FB, Instagram and Twitter went to die. Twitter is actually not even there anymore.
I feel like I'm 10 years younger.
Yeah I like it here. How's Lemmy? What, to you, makes Lemmy preferable to Kbin?
Lemmy makes its image previews proportional rather than squashing them into a square, as kbin presently does, for one.
Well that's a thing! I had noticed that but not thought much on it. i imagine Earnest has that on his todo list already, but there's a lot on there!
What's funnier is that Kbin squashes them into a square and then seem to stretch that square into some strange almost 3:2 landscape format.
I tried to add some custom CSS with Tampermonkey to fix the thumbnails, and was extremely confused until I realised what was happening.
Can't collapse comments on kbin, either.
It's awesome to be able to comment and interact across instances
The Beauty of Fediverse!
Do comments go across instances? I can see that posts can but I'm still not clear on whether comments sections for federated posts are separate or merged or what
Comments are posted across instances, although sometimes it will be delayed in sync (especially when there is a lot of traffic).
Yes, they do. Although it can take a few minutes if the instances are busy.
The best part about leaving reddit behind was that I could start over with a different username. My name over there was so negative and it didn't truly reflect who I am today...thanks to LSD.
Hopefully over here we'll care a bit less about reputation points as well. The system for it is currently broken in kbin, and I can't say it's a great loss.
It's pretty cool.
kbin works great. i couldnt get signed up for lemmy
Nice to see you
@tauonite Hello and nice to see you! I couldn't look here much the last few days but it seems like we are federating again which is great!
Life is good, so far.
Chill as usual.
It's good. I'm on a lemmy instance too, not sure which I prefer, but so far more active here. I appreciate that it doesn't really matter which I use.
Really liking it so far. Federation isn't perfect but I'd say me being able to see this is at least a small win?
It's going pretty good mayne! She's crashing a lot, but that's understandable due to the drastic uptick in userbase. Day 1 on kbin was great, got high hopes for day 2 ✌️
Having a good time. Lemmy was giving me too many errors, but if they improve it I may switch more to posting from that account again.
I kinda liked that, but I can't easily see fresh post on Lemmy. Their frontpage seems to either be too stale with 6 day old content or too new with 0 comments. Combine that with the bug that keeps loading new content as you scroll and it drive you nuts.
Hoping for 0.18 to be released soon as that fixes the new content bug!
It's good over here! Our news sorting actually works!
This isn't by Kbin account, but I honestly prefer Kbin's interface. Lemmy's is shiny, but it also has a few problems that can be a little annoying when trying to use Lemmy on a computer.
It also works on my older tablet with imploding like Lemmy's does, which is a nice bonus.
I'm on kbin too, but my understanding is that the next Lemmy release is going to stop the auto refresh that keeps the interface moving while trying to use it, which I would guess is one of the "little annoying" UI issues and probably also produces some of the load.
I mean, my guess is that the low-hanging fruit, the really in-your-face stuff that take a tweak or two, is gonna get hammered out pretty quickly on both software packages. Hell, if it doesn't, I'll throw some PRs in myself.
It's things like scaling issues at the ActivityPub level or something like that that I'm more wondering about. Some of that may be harder, because as the Fediverse keeps growing, I suspect that scaling issues will show up.
Fabulous.
The future is federated. 💪🌎
Can’t explain it, but signed up for both and kbin just feels…nice?
Hello from the other siiiiiide.
Our sorting algo is diiiiiivine.
Content is more varied,
Not shuffled poorly.
The front page looks better,
Doesn't scroll rapidly.
... That's all I've got.
Not bad, thanks! Dog is sleeping on my lap, pinning down my scrolling and tapping hand with his little chin, but I’m managing. How’s stuff over in Lemmyville?
I’m still stumbling around bumping into things. But someone kindly explained how to pin the site to my phone - it’s sitting next to Apollo, for now - and things are starting to feel better. I spent an embarrassingly long time looking for the back button before realising swype worked.
I'm enjoying it, but I wish kbin had a dark mode. As more users start coming over from reddit, etc. and producing content, it should get even better.
Dude thanks so much! I was scouring the limited settings pages and was like where the heck is dark mode lol
I wish they'd merge identically named communities, or allow mods to select specific communities to merge into each other.
i.e. subscribing to /m/technology, they should automatically federate lammy.ml/c/technology ... or a mod of /m/askkbin can choose to federate /c/asklemmy, etc... that would be awesome
@tauonite
I'm liking it a lot! Love that we can shout over the fence to our neighbors. :)
Right now it's shouting over the fence to talk between Kbin and Lemmy, it's a bit clunky and buggy. Hopefully that fence can over time lower and be completely removed as the code gets better and better. Looking forward to having a great time with you guys!
True, but a lot works well. I can browse subs through the front page or sub really easily on KBin. I'm not a fan of how every federated sub says owned by @ernest though.
I'm still confused how this works. I can barely tell the difference between what comes from lemmy vs kbin. It seems like its all just mixed together in my feed. Does it only matter if I try to post or comment on something from lemmy?
Also, is there a way to subscribe or unsubscribe from other things in the fediverse? Or is it all just automatically linked at the instance level and I don't do anything at the account level?
