There's got to be more too it than that. Like is there some kind of normalization of mass killing in liberalism? Is it nationalist brainworms and assigning all the misdeeds of the nation to the individual?
Noticeable in a lot of links to reddit threads, too. You'll definitely find unhinged fascism in the comments, but you see people arguing against it (or posting genuinely good takes) fairly often as well.
Libs, a land of contrasts (also some of this is just from reactionaries).
A…new school? Truly this symbol of imperialist oppression must be destroyed.
I probably shouldn't even ask, but surely these libs realized that lots of Russians have always lived in Ukraine too? And that the kids going to a school in Mariupol will be mostly Ukrainian?
Much of eastern Ukraine is occupied by Russians for generations now and AFAIK it was through natural means and not imperialism. So schooling the population there with a Russian agenda isn’t really imperialism.
But “schools are never imperialist” isn’t exactly a great argument. Schooling is one way imperialists spread their influence. Why do you think Vietnamese, Latinos, and many Africans write in Latin for their official languages with little to no knowledge of any system before?
That's good point. Honestly, my reply was just mocking the libs who call everything Russia does ImPeRiAlIsM and there wasn't much more thought put into it.
To the extent that there was deliberate ethnic cleansing under Imperial Russia (and to some extent the USSR) it wasn't ethnic Ukrainians being displaced from Novorossiya, it was Tatars displaced from Crimea.
libs are perfectly aware this began as a civil war and fully back the Ukrainian state's ethnic cleansing policies
To me, this demonstrates a lack of understanding, not a total understanding. They just don't know shit about the situation (minor details like the fact that they would consider most of these kids to be Ukranian) but are happy to shout "Russia Bad."
There's a reason you can pry libs away from supporting wars over time -- eventually the facts come out (for example, more and more press admitting that there are Nazis in Ukraine), and some of them will respond to that. They just aren't going to sift through the propaganda on their own.
Arguing with people who believe in "Russia bad" because my media tells me so is borderline impossible. They incapable of thinking anymore. Like, 98% are not into military at any given country. Stop this bs
I bet this lil guy looks off into the mirror and makes that exact pfp face while snickering to himself everytime he posts like this. Like a bad kid who knows exactly what he's doing, but with a bigger ego and a worse shave.
Eastern Ukraine has a mix of ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians so yes there will probably be ethnic Ukrainian children there.
If your talking about the accusations about stealing children. I think this is just a normal school the Russians are pouring resources into rebuilding cities that were ravaged by the war, or at least they want to portray that they are. If Russia genuinely believe it is annexed territory it isn't really weird for them to have public services. It is a bit fucked for some random halfway access the world to fantasize about blowing it up.
On the stealing children thing, Ngl everytime I read about it I get more confused. There was a long form piece on PBS newshour last month or a couple months on mother's smuggling themselves into Russia to get their children from a boarding facilities, they lived in a city that was on the Russian controlled side of the Frontline that was evacuated or something. They went on great lengths to get into Russia and then to crimea because you can't really just like drive through a warzone. But when they got to the boarding facility they presented their id and there children were returned to them without any hassle. There were government employees bc it was a state run facility but not like soldiers or anything like that. The whole thing was just weird. iirc they had hidden cameras on them so it wasn't like the staff at the facility would be like "don't make a scene bc they are gonna catch us red handed".
Idk how to describe why the tone of the piece felt weird. Seeing, once they got there, them just pick up their kids without a fuss stood in contrast to what is being portrayed as genocide. Like the fact they had to smuggle themselves there is seriously fucked. Maybe you'll just call me a genocide denier but the malice and intent that I think of when I hear genocide was just seemed missing. Idk
I'll see if I can find the report. On phone rn so kinda hard to dig up. And sorry if autocorrect fucked something up or my punctuation is bad.
