Transgender Texans will no longer be able to change the sex on their driver's license

The Texas Department of Public Safety will no longer allow Texans to change the sex on their driver’s license — even if they have a court order.

Texas now joins a number of conservative states that have set new policies that aim to block or make it more difficult for transgender people to adjust their driver's licenses to reflect their gender identity, including Florida, Kansas and Missouri. Some of those have drawn legal challenges.

In a statement Wednesday, the department said as of Aug. 20, the agency will no longer comply with court orders mandating the change to driver's licenses after Attorney General Ken Paxton's office raised concerns about their validity.
