Something interesting I heard from a TTC maintenance guy recently: The streetcars that replaced the old CLRVs have rigid wheel axles while the old ones had a little "play" in them. Which means they squeak more and grind the rails harder at end loops, wearing them out faster. They are trying to mitigate the noise with specialized grease and other tactics.
