im so confused. what happened

The person was invited to a party & showed up with a gift. When they opened the door it was very loud, bright & smoky inside & decided they didn't want to go in. The person left the gift outside before leaving.

Before leaving to where? The party after all? Or if it's to home, why leave the gift?
