What the... I've heard of illegal drug labs of course but illegal infectious disease labs is a new, worrying, one to me.

Is having hundreds of lab mice inherently illegal?
- If done covertly without care for animal welfare it probably is, or I think it should be. Animal drug testing is already ethically dubious with oversight..
This story is so light on details it's absolutely spooky.

Either they weren't operating for long or there's "more" to the story that's under a Federal Gag Order.
