Closing Registrations. Reflecting on viability of continuation of Yiffit
Hello,
Unfortunately I am not able to take care of Yiffit as it deserves. Unfortunately, having been blocked by lemmy.ml, Yiffit is not a good instance to explore the lemmyverse because it is restricted. At the same time, I feel like there's countles off other sites where Yiff can be found in a better way.
I have closed registrations for the time being as I gather feedback and collect my thoughts.
Lemmy.ml is blocked by most of the rest of Lemmy, and it also doesn't matter if they blocked us because we can still see it (not that you'd want to unless you're an authoritarian communist).
I've been using this instance nearly the entire time I've been on Lemmy and I'm on all the time. Being defederated from .ML has had literally no effect on my experience. Then again, most of the communities and users I have blocked are from Lemmy.ml and Hexbear because the instances are home to MAGAT like people who claim to be communists and generally have nothing to say but vitriol toward LGBTQ+, women and trans people.
I'm not even here for the yiff, specifically. I'm here for the name and the fact it's small and doesn't get laggy or go down all the time like World does. I love it here. I am comfortable here. I'm willing to help with what I can if it means keeping Yiffit alive. Just... I don't have money 😭
I don't know what it takes to run an instance, but time is a finite resource, and can understand if life takes you to other places and a free website for others falls behind. I can say, that yiffit always seems to be working and to me that is #1. Please don't take any of my comments or posts about function to mean you aren't doing enough or there is something more you could do. Lemmy itself still has a 0.x release and lots of bugs/missing features in many aspects.
We not might be a big group here, but it seems to be a pretty good one. I for one don't miss .ml, and never got the sense they (the developers) were a particularly welcoming bunch. I think even pawb runs off their own fork in case they (.ml) let their views into the code itself. In general blocking from other instances is just something that comes with federation, you will never see everything and the whims of a single admin could cut off large chunks.
I know nothing about sysadmin or moderation, but I'm confident there are others here who do and would help if asked.
Thank you for running yiffit. I have enjoyed my time here, and if it sticks around, I will continue to be here.
I didn't notice being blocked by lemmy.ml and as such that hasn't been a concern for me at all. I've very much enjoyed using yiffit and it's proven that an open reddit-like platform is not just viable, but actually appealing!
I hope you make the best decision for yourself, and even if it ends up shutting down, I believe you can look back on it as a success regardless!
No matter what decision you take, I want to add (as a long-term Yiffit user) that there is no place like Yiffit. It is true that there are hundreds of yiff or furries communities in general and places where I can get yiff, but the instance community does not make it the yiff, its members do it and here I have not found a single negative user, in fact quite the opposite, and regarding lemmy.ml I really don't think anyone cares much, and if so, you can create an account in another instance and that's it.
And I'm sure something can be done to moderate Yiffit better, personally I would have liked to be an admin to help moderating but I never saw that there were open positions, and now I don't have the time to do it... but I wouldn't mind voluntarily donating to Yiffit for example if someone can take that responsibility as it should be done.
Hey. I know I've not been posting much, but I still lurk around here.
Honestly, the past few weeks for me have been filled with anxiety over "purges" of adult content and similar, so it's been nice to find a place such as this which is friendly towards it. I know that there has been a few pretty bad incidents here in the past, and I can see not wanting to continue the site because of them, but I hope you do. And if you do shut down the site, thank you for running it while you could.
With regards to the lemmy.ml issue, I've been getting sentiments across the lemmyverse (mostly from .world) that they aren't worth interacting with. Mostly because they are very blockhappy towards anything that disagrees with their political views. Honestly, personally I'm perfectly happy with using Yiffit to only browse Yiffit communities. Like I said, it's nice and cozy here, and we can always make accounts on more general purpose instances if we really need to.
I will also echo others by saying that the instance getting blocked by lemmy.ml hasn't had any effect on me. When I originally heard the news, I checked the communities I had subscribed to and barely any of them were for .ml. So I don't think there's any big loss from being blocked by them. I still check Lemmy almost daily through this instance. c:
@Wander aww man, and I was looking forward to explore this as my entrance to the lemmyverse, some day, in my own pace. Your reasons are fully understandable though, fediblocks were a terrible design decision to begin with, way to ruin the fedi user experience.

I would definitely disagree with that one, they may suck when they are abused but they are very much needed to keep spam and trolls out, since anyone can host a server you need the ability to block servers which foster toxic environments or servers with the intent to cause harm, banning users isn't enough in those cases because malicious servers will typically spawn more users with different names or allow their members to create as many accounts as desired to circumvent remote bans.
This is especially important on LGBTQ servers (which both this one and the one you're on are) where many people are targeted minorities and in the interest of keeping them and everyone else safe necessitates blocking other servers.
There are projects that don't implement blocking or make such blocking functionally useless, and those spaces are for the most part awful places to be, overrun by crypto shills, scammers, and bigoted trolls.
That's really too bad and I hope you do continue to stick around. While I'm mainly on Pawb.social I do enjoy a few communities on here and it would be sad to see those communities gone.
I wouldn't worry about lemmy.ml too much, as many people have said they tend to have a lot of political problems with their management and also as many people have said most content on ml ends up on world anyway so it's not that big of a deal.
so happy to see the instance back online. i've missed it. completely understandable that you're not able to expend the time to maintain it. it's a lot of work and effort and money D: thank you for all you do, @Wander@yiffit.net
