That's me deleted my Reddit account along with all data as I do not agree with recent events that have been taking place. I'm going to concentrate on Mastodon , Lemmy and take a look at Kbin .
Still can't fathom deleting my Reddit account, even though I was always much more of a lurker. I was quicker with Twitter --> Mastodon. Deleted everything as soon as the shit started hitting the fan and didn't look back. I'm sold on Lemmy, though. I'm getting a whole lot of what I was getting there around these parts, and it seems to be a wee bit more friendly for the kind of people me likey.
I feel you. I am signing up for Lemmy, even though I still hope that Reddit's shitshow will be resolved by June 30th. I joined Reddit around 16 years ago and while I nuked many alt accounts in this timeframe, nuking the final one, knowing it will be my departure from the site feels... weird.
Lemmy has a long way to go before it can be an actual replacement, but seeing the steady stream of new users over the past few days, I can see the potential. It feels very much like when I first joined Reddit.
I don't think I've taken a shit without opening reddit in 10 years. I never viewed it as social media. More like someone watching TV or reading a book. 10 years is the same age as my son. That is a quarter of my life Reddit is Fun has been 90% of my phone usage (I take a lot of shits apparently). That is a hard thing to scrub from existence. But, if they are forcing me to get rid of Reddit is Fun and I have to learn a new UI I might as well leave to greener pastures anyway.
Reddit won't be resolved unfortunately. The site has been on a major slide for years now. The whole Ellen Pao thing was just the beginning of the fuckery that we're only seeing accelerate. It's why Spez acted like such a dickass in his AMA; because that is what reddit is now, and he's laying it all out where he wants it to go.
The best time to leave was years ago, the second best time is now.
I feel you, I had a five year acc on reddit, but after the shit they have been pulling, Api, not able to use reddit website on mobile, etc Im done. They show they dont care and I think it's time for something else to complete with them.
I feel like I'm getting more. Quality over quantity and really I didn't realize how I missed the community aspect that I used to participate in back in the early 2000 when I first started meeting people online and using forums and making my own web pages and using chat services. I wasn't interacting with anyone on reddit as I had experienced plenty of hostile interactions as well as pointless harassment. I used to be very friendly and helpful but this kind of stuff made me cynical and negative. I would comment on something, provided my insight or info or link or whatever to something and moved on. Didn't look for replies because I knew there were going to be people butthurt I didn't agree with such bigoted or racist or sexist or whatever comment or belief so there was no point in arguing with these people.
I turned off notifications.
I don't feel defensive here. I don't feel desensitized nor do I have my defenses up. I check my notifications knowing it's either a useful reply or a silly joke, so far lol. I'm definitely sticking around. Reddit is off the table.
Totally agree! It’s like a glimpse of the golden IRC days, especially with Matrix becoming more popular and Element continuing to improve their application. Feels kinda exciting to witness these types of Internet communities again.
I thought it was just my social anxiety flaring up when I had new notifications. I never really thought about the fact that I was also avoiding negative replies. It'll be interesting to see how this goes here.
Why do you care about your account? I swap to a new Reddit account every 6-12 months. It literally means nothing. You can resub to everything you had before and it’s like you never left. I feel no love towards my account at all, it’s a tool for enabling me to engage, nothing more.
I grow attached to things. I still keep a 10 year-old laptop with a 10-year old (rolling) Linux installation on it. I put over 500K miles on a car. I was once married for 10 years. That kinda thing. To each their own, I guess ;)
Deleted my account of 15 years with the quickness after the Spez AMA. Just didn't want to participate in that ecosystem anymore and saw the writing on the wall. I came to Reddit from Digg and never went back either.
The fediverse seems to be the future even with any inherent growing pains. I just can't trust one idiot to make decisions for everyone.
You mean that copy and paste effort didn’t make you want to put all the wind in Spez’ sails. I mean there were like 14 complete answers! Maybe not to the questions asked, but look how he put himself out there…
*heavy sarcasm flag for the statement above, sincerity for the one below.
The sign-up process is not even that bad. It's just an email saying, "hey, I wanna join. Will you let me" and done.
Granted I told them a bit about myself, but it doesn't need to be much more complicated than what I just wrote.
Yea, reddit has been going to ahot for quite a while. Just deleted my 5 yr acc and am hoping that this becomes very good. So far its nice with a smaller community. Just gotta learn to be more active with comments and posts
I deleted Twitter without replacement. It felt like I didn't need micro blog posts in my life and I still don't miss it months later.
Reddit I will miss I believe. Once RIF stops working, if things don't get resolved, I'll stop using it and likely delete my account. So far lemmy is a lot of fun and feels a bit like old wild west internet used to feel. Currently it works good enough for the time being and it'll surely improve.
I have used Reddit for almost 15 years now... This is very reminiscent of Reddit from 2012ish, loved the homie vibe of subreddits then, now the site just feels like a megacorp. Loving Lemmy's direction so far.
I'm getting the same vibes. I was in middle school when I signed up for reddit 11 years ago, and I still remember an askreddit thread that was, "Reddit, what do you look like?" and the comments were just selfies. It felt so tight knit, even when it was eclipsing a million subs at that point. These days that kind of community is only found in the most niche of niche subreddits.
This is my first post on Lemmy. Seems ok so far. I'm not going back to Reddit.
For a Twitter replacement I'm enjoying Mastodon. It's got a different vibe, more like Twitter in 2008.
Lemmy is all kinds of okay right now for my puroose. Still very rough around the edges but fun and informative.
What value do you gain from using Mastodon (or Twitter for that matter)? I don't really see myself using it but I'm curious what other people get out of it.
this right here, this is part of what messed things up IMO, reddit blew up with a focus on the link and the discussion, it was a link aggregation system that they pushed into a microblog system to try and monetize it. The number of links that link to reddit or a reddit controlled property these days is pretty high where originally there was rarely a link to reddit properties (aside from cross posts) aside from best of.
They changed the nature of the site after it gained critical mass, then they rode VC money, I'm not sure reddit in its current form ever "worked" they were trying to make it work, like "fetch", its not happening clearly.
I’m leaving Reddit but I don’t think I can bring myself to delete my account. I have posts from years ago that still show up on google and help people. That’s the only reason though.
The instances and communities have appeared in my searches, but posts haven't so far, I don't know if that will change and what is needed to have it change though
agree about the differences between here and the alien. there's civility and discourse here - a good amount of fun - a sense of newness yet familiar. ive engaged more here than i have in 4 years on reddit - thanks all to a great community and gracious hosts running these servers ❤️
I’m in this for the long haul. Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez. I’m here to stay and make this place great. Assuming I can find all the same communities again.
How are you getting on with finding communities? I've really struggled. I'd be open to creating some communities myself and if there's engagement I'd be happy to hand over to a better mod, but I'm not sure of the best practices, which instance to use, etc.
I’ve been looking at “All” under the communities tab of my instance and hen scrolling for things that interest me. There’s also a “sublem” in lemmy.world that shows new communities that are being created, several of which I am very interested in.
In retrospect, I was spending way too much of my time scrolling on reddit. It's very apparent now that I catch myself constantly opening a folder on my phone to tap the reddit icon. Like, constantly.
I miss the days of old, slower forums like Totse. If this community remains mostly active, I'm open to making this my new home. Either way, I don't intend to return to reddit.
Force of habit is a very real thing. Create a shortcut of lemmy bookmark and put in place where old Reddit app icon used to be. iPhone safari allows placing bookmarks on home screen and lemmy works mostly like an app when you do that. Android also has that feature.
Replace Reddit phone app placement with lemmy bookmark and you will instantly find yourself using only lemmy.
Mlem on iOS is still in very early development but works decently well for browsing and commenting. Still needs work for content discovery and filtering out certain sublemmies, but it’s a decent starting point if you want an app-like experience.
I was permabanned after reporting a mod's post that I legitimately found harassing (where they threatened doxxing against users that didn't like a decision). Reddit admins permabanned my 15 year account over it. shrug
This looks like the first welcome and viable alternative, and to boot, the discourse here is quite a bit more pleasant.
@JustineSmithies in a way, i am sad to see Reddit go, but only because it was really formative for me as a young autistic kid living on his own for the first time. i was so embedded into that site, i had even met most of the founders. i met some admins. i saw the darknet market subreddits come and go. what a journey.
edit: forgot to mention, i had been on since late 2006. so, the digg exodus basically.
It’s funny. I never had a Reddit account but because of the shitstorm I came to realize a lot of my troubleshooting was done via Reddit posts. And when kbin and Lemmy popped up as alternatives i created accounts there to try and make it more of a two way street. Although kbin.social is struggling so hard with traffic (for me at least) that I’m primarily on Lemmy now
@JustineSmithies I'll prolly stick around, though with the loss of 3rd party apps, my little visiting, once daily to consume content there, will likely cut down to once a week or less.
I've held of on deleting my account on Reddit for a bit, but after the new posts starting to pop up showing how reddit is ousting moderators to bring subreddits back even though they have opted to go dark, I'm done with it.
My account is not that old compared to some people, but it still feels weird and a little melancholic to delete a 10 year old account... Well good riddance.
I've had my reddit account for nearly 8 years, and today mass edited every comment (with Redact) to say "Deleted due to reddit’s API policy", then logged out for the last time. No mercy lol.
