It literally means prior images, if you're interested in how German works. So these are people, behaviors, things that one might see and want to imitate.
Prior is one way, but it also means "in front", e.g. the image in front of you (that you can copy).

Prior images makes quite some sens, thinking about it. I always interpreted it as pictures in front of you or ones you keep in view, like a mirror
