I know I'm getting older but this would bother me as well. It seems like a terrible way to shorten the word in my head. I think my brain just doesn't like vowels and wants words to be shortened to end with consonants. Things like HOA make sense because they are all individual words.
Also 'tomo' is a prefix meaning cut, e.g. Computed Tomography.
So what you are saying is that OP should tomo her neighbour?
