Like like they're maybe trying to avoid the hate crime charge via an insanity plea...?
Yeah. What else is he supposed to say? The guy basically told the cops "Here's exactly what I did. Also, I meant to kill them, because of their race." Basically, all he can do is threaten to make them waste resources by dragging out the case as much as he can, to increase leverage to get as merciful a plea deal as possible.
