I had a vague sense that it was "things you pull off/out". I don't know how a sticker is a barb. Guess that might be an American term?

Stickers are a name for the seeds of a few grasses in the American South. Many of them have hooks on them, but a lot have sharp little barbs. Sandbur is a good example

That's pretty dang similar! "Sticker" because they stick to you, and it's describing the type of seed instead of the species
