I mean… isn’t that the whole point? Wouldn’t his “big brain” understand that most obvious of ploys?
Even if you see it as a ploy, there's an underlying truth to it, and even as he may wish to not fall for the ploy, he probably can't help but to face the reality that drives the ploy.
