Slightly off topic, but can anyone ELI5 why parts of the ocean way off the coast can be significantly lighter or darker shades of blue?

16 0 ReplyIt is. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is clearly visible in OP's picture as a ribbon of lighter blue.

2 0 ReplyBut, at the depths mostly involved, you would not see it. It's all near-bottomless. It's only meant to convey information evocatively.
