Star Trek: Lower Decks Returns in New Ongoing Comic Series

  • A separate "Prodigy" panel has been added to the SDCC schedule:

    STAR TREK: PRODIGY PANEL

Sunday, July 28, 10:00-11:00 AM PT, Room 6DE

CBS Studios invites you to a special screening of a Season 2 episode of Star Trek: Prodigy, followed by an exclusive conversation with Star Trek legend and voice actor Kate Mulgrew, voice actor Brett Gray and executive producers Kevin & Dan Hageman to discuss the new season currently streaming on Netflix. Moderated by Ryan Britt, editor at Inverse, the panel will also include a special giveaway item.

  • However, this all goes horribly wrong by "Who Saves the Saviors" and "Temporal Mechanics 101." Instead of Chakotay sending the Protostar on autopilot — as everyone assumed he did in the original timeline — he goes with the ship, which means it ends up stranded in 2374.

This basic event is the crux of the near entirety of Season 2. In order for the timeline to be restored, the Protostar has to get back to Tars Lamora, which is why the kids have to team-up with Chakotay to get the Protostar back to where they belong.

None of them would know each other, Gwyn wouldn’t exist, and the Federation wouldn't be saved from the Construct if they didn't. In addition to a lot of other adventures, the big arc in Season 2 is designed to preserve the backstory of Season 1.

And this is the issue that I have with the outcome of the story. After all they did to "restore the timeline," we still have a past in which Gwyn shouldn't exist, because her father never goes back in time to enslave Tars Lamora and become the Diviner.

While I'm sure there's a way to logic it away, it seems to undercut the entire season, and what they were trying to accomplish.

  • Quark's has received a stay of execution until summer significant bugs with the private communities can be fixed in a future Lemmy update.

As much as I'd prefer to keep discussion of Quark's going private restricted to the original thread, I want to take a moment to acknowledge that your concerns have been the most compelling ones expressed so far. I think we're coming at the community from slightly different angles, but you have been heard!

  • Okay, I didn't actually care for the song-and-dance number...but this cut scene wouldn't have helped.

I just didn't like the song.

  • The full announcement says Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, and Kacey Rohl will be repping S31.

The Academy portion just lists Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau for now. I think a surprise guest isn't out of the question, but it's probably best to keep expectations low.

I'd actually love to see even some photos of the giant set they're reportedly building...

  • Nice to see that "Lower Decks" is being given some panel time in the face of its impending doom.

  • Oh yeah, didn't the Hartnell Doctor once wish the viewers at home a happy Christmas?

  • I tempered my expectations quite a bit when they announced he was coming back. He can produce some stellar individual episodes, but I've never cared for his big, "event" stuff.

  • He's being his usual cheeky self, but I have to assume the fourth wall bit will make a kind of sense once we know what her deal is, right?

    ...right?

  • Indeed, Trek seems to do very well in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Germany. After that it drops off pretty quickly.

  • While I certainly wouldn't want every show to be like that, I would absolutely not call it "bad".

    It was...transcendent.

  • "Riverdale" is an odd comparison - like it or hate it, it was one of the most high-concept "teen shows" of all time. Absolutely bonkers.

  • I doubt it - "Academy" was officially announced on May 30, 2023 (and was rumoured to be in development dating back to 2018). "Prodigy" was cancelled on June 23, 2023.

I'll grant that the dates are pretty close together, but I think in a perfect world the two shows would run together, with "Prodigy" targeting the tween crowd, and "Academy" skewing a bit older.

I think the problem is really Paramount+.

    This, I completely agree with.

  • The aging fanbase has been an issue that's been highlighted recently by Jonathan Frakes, among others.

  • Ah yes, the eternal sin of "trying to attract new viewers."

Why can't they continue catering to the original, immortal fanbase? That's just good business!

  • Good to know - frustrating, but hopefully we'll get it sorted out.

  • I've noticed the same thing, but inconsistently - the link will often load after the second or third try. Can you confirm?
