  • Yep. Said it elsewhere but trying to force the fledgling Lemmy community to fit into the giant shoes of Reddit isn’t going to work.

Reddit had years of organic growth that started small and concentrated (user created subs weren’t even a thing originally).

A single game day thread sounds like a good way to get people in the same room for discussion. We’ll make more space when it gets crowded, not before.

  • Yeah it’ll take time and trying to force it won’t work. What people tend to forget is that Reddit started out small with no user-made communities.

The first few subs were kinda generic but concentrated users in one place and bolstered discussion.

What I see a lot of here is people trying to recreate modern Reddit but without allowing for the growth that got them there. Resulting in lots of empty communities and overall a lack of interaction since users are spread apart.

It’s like when DC tried to copy what Marvel was doing without building up their cinematic universe. They jumped straight to that Justice league movie and we all saw how that went.

  • I’d say start with picking a team and go from there. You don’t really need to watch old games and such; it’s not like a tv show haha, no need to catch up on previous seasons. But YouTube has everything to get you started!

I’d look up fun content like Kobe’s old Detail show or breakdowns like that if you’re interested in the actual game. 30 for 30 documentaries can really highlight some great history like you mentioned.

And of course, get yourself a ball and go out to hit some shots. Even just on your own. Nothing better than the personal connection to the game to appreciate what these guys are doing
