No arguments from me, that's why I don't want to live anywhere else.
It does sting a bit to be stuck living with high rent in an apartment when my income would allow me to buy a decent house in another part of the country. But then I likely wouldn't have this income in other parts of the country, either.
When I moved back to the US from China, I immediately had health insurance thanks to Masshealth. Helped me have peace of mind while I was searching for a job back here. And now I get to work for an organization that helps other people land on their feet when big life changes happen, which is easier to do here than elsewhere.
It was good because the people making it were competent. That's really the long and short of it.
The Fallout series released in the same year as the 2nd season of that awful Halo series, and Phil Spencer is basically saying they'd do it all over again if asked.
They don't have a magic formula, they got lucky with their choice of showrunner is all.
Sadly Mass is also close to #1 in terms of cost of living.
I like it here but I don't like what it costs.
I don't think Europe has much conviction regarding Ukraine, unfortunately. Most of the larger EU member states are trying to slow their own Russia-backed right-wing movements but appear to be losing ground by the day. It's only a matter of time before the "appeasement" stance becomes widespread and we end up with a situation mirroring the 1930's.
A better question to start would be if there's any creative commons or copyleft media in the modern zeitgeist.
Memes are made organically as small units of culture and gain popularity via an implicit understanding of meaning that doesn't need to be explained.
For a meme template to have those attributes, it would need to derive from a work that was licensed as CC/copyleft from the get-go and gained popularity among the masses.
That being said, seems a moot point when fair use/derivative work standards allow unlicensed memes to legally exist regardless of the original licensing of the work they were derived from.
Having run out of my previous set of late night easy viewing media, I recently started watching The Next Generation. Was surprised to discover it is actually a fun show (even the supposedly terrible first season), provided you enjoy the veneer of mild campiness inherent to television of the 80's-90's.
The show is also giving me hope that societal progress can never be stopped, since people were able to imagine this sort of reality in much more restrictive times than we have today. I just hope they're wrong about World War 3 beginning in 2026 🥲
But your normie friends and family would fit in a lot better if they simply read some T H E O R Y.
Russia needs to reserve its supply for all of the lucrative trade deals it's about to make with the US.
Conservative religious beliefs and ignorance often go hand-in-hand.
I agree in theory, but big cities are where things get muddy.
When a single city (e.g. New York City, population ~8 million just to use the biggest example) has a population larger than entire states, how do you "split" the state of New York? If the city itself, excluding any of the surrounding "metro area", was its own state, it would be the 13th most populous in the US and also the smallest by area.
Do we carve up each of the boroughs as a separate state, and give New York City 10 senators? It would be more proportional representation for the people of NYC, but also their close proximity and interdependence would very much align their priorities and make them a formidable voting bloc. And even then, you could still fit 4 Vermonts worth of people into Brooklyn alone. How much would we need to cut to make it equitable? Or do we work the other way as well and tell Vermont it no longer gets to be its own state because there aren't enough people?
For states like California, which still have large cities but not quite to the extreme of New York, how do we divide things fairly? Do we take a ruler and cut it into neat thirds, trying to leave some cities as the nucleus of each new state? Or do we end up with the state of California (area mostly unchanged), the state of Los Angeles, and the state of The Bay Area?
Yeah, I think the button is probably mislabeled.
The "permalink" label is also just a holdover from Reddit; with there being two separate link standards on Lemmy, I think it'd be nice if the app differentiated...but that's a separate topic entirely!
Getting a 404 at that page, do you have a mirror?
Guessing not much will happen to the calendar until (well, if) mankind ever settles on other planets. Some universal mode of timekeeping would need to be decided upon for consistency between planets with differing day and year lengths.
The function does exist, just a bit buried (and with different names?)
From a post, press the 3-dot Menu button, press Copy, and then Copy Username.
From a comment, tap the comment to reveal the comment actions, press the 3-dot Menu button, press Copy, and then press the Copy Permalink button that has an icon of a person next to it (I am assuming that is supposed to read as Copy Username like the option from the post)
Doesn't seem to be any convenient way to copy links for communities though, neither from a post nor from the community page itself. At least none that I can find quickly.
Giving new meaning to "My body is a temple"
Hopefully Germany treads lightly. A simple ban that fails to address why AfD is gaining ground is going to end up creating a martyr complex if left unchecked.
Microsoft had a lineup of games this year?
I think Kamala could have been the perfect candidate and she still would've lost.
The economy being in the shitter under the Biden-Harris administration killed any possibility of either of them winning another term. The economy ended up being the single biggest issue for American voters. Way bigger than bodily autonomy for women, LGBT+ rights, or Palestine.

I was able to comment in these threads from my PC via the Alexandrite frontend, but attempting to view those comments via Sync displays "Could not load post" with an option to Retry, which does not succeed.
Post 1 appears visible when opening the community, but opening the post displays the same error. Post 2 (the sh.itjust.works link which is posted on a lemmy.world community) the post does not appear in the community at all in Sync.
Confirmed that these communities/users are not blocked on my account, and no filters set within the app should apply to these posts either.

Aorzia has gotten a bit stale lately, hasn't it?
When Samsung last updated One UI several months ago, myself and many other Samsung users (and Pixel users on Android 14 as well, judging by the replies) encountered a bug where swiping posts closed showed only a black background until fully closed, after which the content one would expect to see would appear.
Last night, One UI updated to 6.1 on my device, and when I used Sync this morning, I noticed that the black background bug is no longer happening.
>!Unfortunately I now need to re-learn my navigation gestures because Samsung apparently thinks it's fine to force people to completely re-learn how they navigate their phone overnight...!<

Seen on a comment today, this user with an Arabic username, written right to left, is rendered in between the points value and label text in Sync, rather than to the left of the value as expected.

How to Participate in the Xbox Series X|S Open Beta Test
As one of the (probably few) FFXIV players who actually has access to an Xbox Series X, it is a bit disappointing that there is no way to participate in the beta.
Hope the people who have an Xbox and are interested in FFXIV but didn't pick it up yet for any other platform enjoy the beta. All 10 of them.

From the Fanfest keynote, the 6.55 update will come with a full 24-hour downtime while they work on replacing the JP server infrastructure.

Noticed a minor bug this morning when swiping a post closed where there is only a black screen in the background in place of the feed.
The feed loads immediately as expected when the post is fully closed, making this only a minor issue.
Notably, my phone updated to Android 14 just last night, so I was not sure if there was something weird with the OS update impacting the app, but it persists through a force close and clearing cache.
