Linux Mint 21.2 “Victoria” Cinnamon released!
  • Just installed this yesterday as a dual-boot. For the most part I'm enjoying it so far, had a few issues before I updated the kernel including no sound but managed to fix that.

Now the only annoyance is that I remote into a Windows 10 work Pc on a multi-nonitor setup, unfortunately Remmina just doesn't handle zoom on a single display well at all and scales every monitor, so have had to start trying to get used to a lower zoom level on my bigger monitor.

  • What are you currently reading?
  • I'm currently reading I Robot by Isaac Asimov, it's very well written and I'm finding the dichotomy between such an old view of what the future may be like with the futuristic themes quite amusing.

Would definitely recommend any sci-fi fans give it a shot. It's not nearly at the same scale as our modern day space operas but it's really quite interesting so far.

A fan of Torn, Hobo Wars and similar games? Come try out Cartel Empire!

Hey folks, Hopefully this is allowed but if not I understand and will remove the post if I can.

For the past 2 years I've been working on a side project called Cartel Empire. It's my own spin on games such as Torn City, Hobo Wars, Mafia Wars etc in that the goal is to build up your own character over potentially years and to do so as part of a larger community.

Cartel Empire is really about playing the game your own way, whether that's spending every moment committing crimes, spending time in the Gym to beat down your enemies more efficiently or building a community of like-minded Narcos as part of player-ran Cartels.

I've just released the Territory War system and would love for people to come try out the game and feed back what you like and what you think I could improve. I've got a Discord of 140 or so people I'm working closesly with and developing the game further based on the brilliant feedback from the community.

  • I found the online functionality to be really frustrating. Unless you're online it'll kick you out, you then need to wait to reconnect. Also being so used to Pokémon I found the typings to be confusing and not particularly obvious from the look of the TemTems what types they may be.

This all sounds rather negative but I do think it's quite well made overall, just not my cup of tea.

  • Looking to fill that void of time after leaving Reddit? Check out Torn.
  • I personally love Torn and play it daily and have done for years. If you want something similar I've been trying to put my own spin on things with Cartel Empire which I've been developing for about 2 years as a side-project.

We've got a small but active community that's constantly growing and I'd love to have more people on the Discord as I try to include the community in as much if the development as I can.

  • Any indie/hobbiest game devs here? Show off what you're working on!
  • I've been actively developing Cartel Empire for about a year and a half now. It started off as a bit of a side project whilst I worked a boring IT job but has just kept growing which is amazing.

It's all hosted on Azure and written in JavaScript using Express for the backend and pug templates for the front-end.

I'm on mobile just now but if anybody is curious or has questions I'll be back later and am more than happy to answer anything.

  • What are the best free games for a low end pc?
  • One I never see mentioned anywhere is Transcendence which is a space rogue-lite game where you cross the galaxy fighting numerous different types of enemies and taking down space stations.

It's free to download on the kronosaur site or like £4 on steam

Share you favourite Sci-Fi books and what you loved about them

I've been getting through more and more sci-fi books and would love recommendations on the books you've all enjoyed.

For myself I thought the Xeelee series was brilliant. Taking us from the dawn of time through to the end of the universe and around again. Fighting aliens from other dimensions and the creators of the universe themselves.

Desktop GPU Sales Lowest in Decades: Report
  • Honestly I recently purchased a new RTX 4070 TI and it's absolutely dominated everything I've chucked at it. But it was very expensive for what it was and I can completely understand why people have issues with the latest generations

  • Why do I get different results when searching for communities on two different instances?
  • Yeah I can appreciate the goal, and I can deal with many of the minor technical issues but this seems like a killer for me personally. The small community is already massively segmented due to the model, and I don't see it getting better if each new person that joins up is on their own random instance and there's no common way to cross them all and to dedupe magazines.

But anyway I don't want to be too negative as I realise this is all fairly new but think I'll leave my account active so I can try this again in a while but it's not for me yet.

  • Why do I get different results when searching for communities on two different instances?
  • How is this expected to become popular if you need to go through all of that? I figured I could just search for a topic then subscribe, but if they're all separate then surely they'll all just become segmented with time and contain duplicate communities in many cases?
