  • See, I've never liked that 'go back in time and tweak things to make a small change' line of thought. There's too many ways you can either make something worse happen (Trump gets drafted in Vietnam, but manages to spend the entire time as file clerk and comes back and now gets to hang the 'I'm a veteran!' flag on his hat) or it won't accomplish what you meant.

Basically, if you had a time machine and were trying to stop future events, there's really only one approach you should be considering.

  • That's the plan, basically. 1000 of 5.56, another 1000 of 9mm, but an absolutely stupid amount of .22LR for the Glock 44.

Shit's cheap, and fun to shoot, so I might as well just buy a truckfull of it.

  • Misskey is basically fine, but it's very oriented to it's creator's home country.

If you can use it cool, but if you can't they're not going to fix it for you.

    Perfectly sane response, IMO.

The other forks you mention are because Firefish's devleoper decided to destroy his project, and vanish. And, of course, since that's not enough, he then dumped maintenance on someone who didn't really want maintenance responsibilities, and they completely killed the project.

So, those two are the "western" forks of Misskey, basically.

  • Finally found time to take the AR-15 to the range and work with the instructor I've been using for the handguns.

Aaaaand while handguns are nice and all, this thing is the most fun I've had in a LONG time.

Of course I now have to scramble and decide how much ammo to buy before tariffs screw that up making this super costly (most of the cheap but not shit ammo is from SK, BR, and CZ, and even US-based stuff is made with materials from not-here).

But on the bright side, I finally got myself properly medicated, and holy shit is that fucking amazing. I've known I've had ADHD my whole life, but due the lovely bonus of also being bipolar and having a really really awful reaction to any sort of stimulant (even something mild like caffiene) it's always just kinda not been treated and ignored.

Yeah well, current pdoc wrote a script for guanfacine and it's like my whole brain suddenly just decided to make sense and behave itself. Stopped shit like leg twitches, and biting my nails, and running through crowds dodging people instead of walking a normal pace.

Also started finishing projects, being able to go to the store without a list and not forgetting a bunch of stuff, and generally just being a normal person.

  • Be careful, someone will be along shortly to tell you how horrible of a person you are for saying you don't think everyone on Reddit should move over.

(I agree, and would say that if we capture the good 5% of the Reddit user base and not the people who clearly have cognitive issues, we're going to have the best thing since uh, Reddit.)

  • lot of people from the US with gas grid (which we don’t really have around here), is it really so that your Joe Average can’t tell the difference between 1kWh of heat produced by gas compared to electricity

Right, because for most people gas is metered and sold by the CCF, and not converted into kW at any point in the chain.

So I know i used 30ccf last month, but there's zero indication what that is in kW, because we usually don't convert between the meter (which is volumetric) and the billing, which could be anything but why bother?

  • Installed yes, but the OOBE that runs (assuming the OEM didn't fuck it up) is more or less the same as a retail install: you have to add the account, untick the 300 'yes, please spy on me' boxes, and tell it that you do not want office 14 times.

  • Don't let it connect to the wifi/internet?

I mean, sure, you have to do the SD card shuffle, but it'll guarantee you don't end up having to deal with this.

If you have a more advanced set of network hardware (which it doesn't sound like you do) you could add a firewall rule to block traffic from the LAN IP of the printer, or for something like Unifi, simply block internet access entirely. But, even then, if you screw it up now or in the future, surprise software updates will happen.

  • And they also had the turn-into-a-zombie plague event when Wrath launched, too.

As I recall, that mostly just made everyone rage because the assholes running around spreading it everywhere were just annoying the crap out of everyone and the general thought is they just needed to fuck off and find something else to do.

    Or, basically, Covid.

  • This is also a royal pain if you're into retro computers and want anything from like 2001-2004, because damn near every single motherboard from those eras need to be recapped, like, without exception. Either they're dead, or they will be soon.

Super annoying to get a thing you want to play with and the first thing you have to do is replace 20 caps and spend 3 hours doing it before you can even see if it would otherwise even work, lol.

  • maybe that’s me being overly harsh

That's actually probably fair: the M-chips are impressive, but they're just an evolution that's come out of the A-series stuff for their phones.

Which, of course, Apple bought and did not actually create. (I'll let someone else argue the merits of buy vs do it yourself, especially when you give your aquisition endless R&D funds to make good shit.)

  • affordable thrift store items

This has slowly become less and less true.

The big corpo thrift stores have long since had pricing that exceeds reasonable: a 10 year old shirt with some event printed on it is not $9.99, when I can go to any of a dozen retailers and just... buy a new one, often for less.

Smaller ones aren't quite there yet, but smaller ones also tend to put more effort into fishing anything good in their donation streams out and posting it on ebay, so you end up with a store full of what is, quite literally, just trash.

The last wardrobe refresh I did I ended up buying almost entirely new or used from like eBay because the pricing at Goodwill, Salvation Army, and a couple of local thrift stores were at best similar and at worse wildly stupid.

The days when you could get a $0.99 shirt and $1.99 pants if you went on the correct color day are pretty much entirely dead, because capitalists going to capital, even if they're literally profiting directly off stuff people are giving them for free.

  • If your retirement window is 5 years, you're probably very very fucked.

If it's 10 years, as long as you're assuming social security is going to contribute $0, you're probably still pretty fucked.

15 years? Maybe, but at that point that whole global climate change thing we're ignoring is going to start getting more serious, so I'd wager on fucked.

20? Please, you're already in the trenches of the Water Wars, so your retirement plan is machine gun when you go over the top, sorry.

Basically retirement is going to be you dying once your insurance lapses and someone coming along later to pick your corpse up and billing your family for doing so.

(I'd love to be proven wrong, but 'What's the worst most awful thing that could possibly happen' seems to be the right choice these days.)

  • Listen, I can't just not use Amazon. Where else am I going to get my SYPHILICHODE nail trimmers and LEAKCROTCH underwear?

You can't just find horrible garbage to buy ANYWHERE, you gotta buy it on Amazon.

I can live without it for a week, but man, these underwear don't last too long so I gotta keep buying more!

(/s in case this was not sufficiently clear, but this is the ultimate problem with all these pointless little internet symbolic gestures: nobody will notice, remember, or care about them since they're only going to be a very minor stoppage in buying things, which everyone ends up buying ANYWAYS after the week is over.)

  • I have an endless amount of respect for ANYONE that's willing to swallow their pride and do shit like this when it's in the interests of other people, their country, or whatever.

Takes an actual good human to go 'fuck it, this guy is a complete piece of shit but I'm going to make nice because it's what I need to do for others'.

Can't imagine Musk or Trump or JD doing that, ever.

  • Elon has always been a terrible person

The problem with Elon is he's been provably an idiot for the past 25 years.

The first thing I ever heard about Musky is that back in 2000-ish he wanted PayPal to take their infra, throw out all the Linux/BSD in use, and move everything to Windows NT.

Anyone who was even remotely IT adjacent in that era can come along and tell you how utterly moronic that idea is.

Anytime I've ever heard him blather on about some stupid shit that doesn't exist except in his delusions or talk about, well, ANYTHING technical or specialized all I was ever able to think of is that he got lucky that Thiel didn't drain all of his blood and leave his corpse in a ditch.
