I wish it was like chess, Chess at least has clear rules on what moves are allowed and an end-goal (capture the king). Life not so much. It is one big guessing game, from rules, to goals, and everything in between.
I always try to look at it as a work in progress.
it isn't finished yet till all layers of paint have dried and when I hate something in a text I try to point to find out what, why and how can it be better. Wich result in a never ending cycle of editing, but each time there is a little less hate and after a while I even start to think this might be even something I can be oke with. (even if it needs a "Little" more work)
Just don't give up, it will be better in the end, and till than it might be part of your process.
I love your theory. The real world one looks true to me as well. But it is your in-world one that sounds so intriguing. And quite possible true.
the biggest weak spot I can think of is that some of the ferengi gathered at the convention to discuss the Gamma Quadrant (DS9 The Nagus) are wearing headskirts. Of course your (in-world) explanation about them not feeling secure enough to go bare, could work always. And I am not sure of their roles in the ferengi society either.
Also what I wanted to add not all paintings are physically accurate on sails and wind direction.
I once played a game of from how many directions does the wind blow on this painting, and this was in a maritime museum with paintings depicting sea battles. (and a lot had the "problem" of every ship had it's own wind)
so what I wanted to say, is if you aren't trying to depict really accurate the ship anyways. (as to me Pirate ship sound like a really bad generalization of ships types.) Do whatever you like looking at the best. And otherwise, follow u/swope 's advise.
Can't a picture not also be a photo? Nice to see that you found the photographer.
But what I wondered is how can you make a photo of the inside of a mushroom with the grass visible as well. How can you hold a camera like that, or is there some special angle lens involved. But I guess if you aren't the original photographer it is hard to answer that question.
Why did I expect the Malthese Falcon, after looking at the title. Still thank you OP for posting this link, Shenandoah of Sark is as well a beautiful ship.
