  • OpenAI’s Sam Altman has bet the house on building AGI, or artificial general intelligence—to the point where he once addressed a crowd of industry observers who asked him about OpenAI’s business model, and told them with a straight face that his plan is to build a general intelligence system and simply ask it how to make money. (He has since moved away from that bit, saying AGI is not “a super useful term.”)

    This fucking guy...

  • Mark Carney, having been a neoliberal banker all his life, turns out to be a neoliberal banker. At the last election the looming threat of the far right drove Canada back into the arms of the moneyed owners. It's sad to see the country taking this lurch to the right. I hope the NDP can get its act together and be an unashamed left party. If it picks a dynamic, genuine leader who can talk directly about things that matter to people, it can make a comeback like the Green Party looks set to do in the UK, now that their new leader is explicitly calling it a socialist party.

  • That was a problem in Reagan's time too. It didn't stop him firing them all. Air traffic control in the USA is still suffering the after effects of Reagan's action, as the generation that trained up to replace the workers he fired is all retiring at the same time.

  • For now, Android is the best compromise between functionality and openness that's suitable for daily use, especially GrapheneOS. Hopefully some of the Linux alternatives will develop to that point soon, but by all accounts they're not there yet. So it's worth fighting to keep what we have until we can use something more open.

  • That's the capitalist way. There have to be some people whose misery incentivizes the rest of us to stick with our shitty jobs and make money for the owners.

Combine that with the incentives for private companies to build houses being all wrong under capitalism, so that they'll only build when there's a big profit to be made, and the people's trained allergy to investment in the public good, and you get this situation where every city has thousands of homeless people, everyone knows it's a terrible problem, but no one will do a thing to help them.

  • Yeah, the places to use it are (1) boilerplate code that is so predictable a machine can do it, and (2) with a big pinch of salt for advice when a web search didn't give you what you need. In the second case, expect at best a half-right answer that's enough to get you thinking. You can't use it for anything sophisticated or critical. But you now have a bit more time to think that stuff through because the LLM cranked out some of the more tedious code.
