  • If going to a city still seems to hard, maybe going to something like ren fest or a convention dresses as a character would be an easier step. Did that recently where my brother (who I'm out to) and I dressed as characters who are brother and sister. Didn't really have any bad experiences (some people clearly thought it was funny I was dressed as a girl but they weren't being malicious). Also had stranger ask me what I did for boobs, which was kinda weird but they just were curious (bra + small cheap breast forms). Otoh, I had a mom ask for her daughter if her daughter could take a picture with me and most people were just like "hey, it's [character's name]!"

  • Its worked on desktops for years and works right now. As someone else pointed out "win+." works as well. Or maybe its supposed to be the only way it works and mine is bugged? Idk. I found it via trying to lock my desktop and mistyping.

  • I ebike regularly to work, but still far from everyday. 25km/15mi each way makes it a bit time consuming. But I live within walking distance of a grocery store, a gym, elementary, middle, & high school, multiple pharmacies, all sorts of medical facilities, multiple parks, cafes, restaurants, a transit station (that unfortunately doesn't actually get used except for rushhour, which is irrevelant for me), etc. Very little reason to drive outside of the commute here and things like trips to visit family. Still the infrastructure leaves some to be desired, but you don't even need a bike to get to most amenities in a reasonable time.

And I live in an area that is one of the most common go-to examples of car-centric infrastructure. Granted, much more sparsely populated suburbs do exist in the area as well.

  • (Also, did not realize the story of Celeste was written by a trans woman and damn does that not explain why it hit me so hard - def gonna play it again knowing who I am now)

It was in the process of making Celeste that she discovered herself from my understanding. When the production started it was by DeadnameMakesGames and then it changed the MaddieMakesGames.

  • At 10 cents per polio vaccine, there are still places where administering them is non-negligible because it's not the cost of the test itself that's an issue. Granted, this probably isn't good enough to make a difference, but if you could get tested just with a cell phone with Internet access without needing to physically ship anything not need a medical professional at the site, it probably could make a big difference in some areas. Granted, those are places where getting medical treatment afterwards is probably hard but at least dealing with it via dietary choice, when that luxury is an option, may help.

  • SpongeBob is another well known ace character, but that's basically just a "sponges are asexual reproducers" joke.

L and Light from Death Note may also be, but I don't know if that's been confirmed by creators or just fan theories.

  • More surprised that 40.8% of LGBTQ+ people say they've had a "universally positive experience of being out". Seems like a really high bar of never having any negative experiences.

Feel like even without stigma or negative reactions, aces would be less likely to be out because its not exactly a topic that comes up often ime, so why bother?

  • Some stats from it:

    • 5.7 per cent of ace people are open with all family members they do not live about their identity, compared to 21.5 per cent of all respondents

    • 26.3 per cent asexual people are open about their sexuality with friends, a number which is below the 33.1 per cent figure for all respondent

    • ace respondents are the most likely group (83.8 per cent) to say that they avoid being open about their sexuality for fear of a negative reaction from others, compared with all respondents (69.6 per cent).

    • just under half of ace people (49 per cent) said they not out to their colleagues, a far higher figure than the rate for all LGBTQ+ respondents (18 per cent).

    • 17.6 per cent said they had a universally positive experience of being out, this is once again a significantly different figure to than of the wider LGBTQ+ community who were surveyed (40.8)

    • ace people were 50 per cent more likely to have never told healthcare staff about their asexuality, with a quarter (24.3 per cent) citing fear of a negative reaction and 8.4 per cent having had a previously negative experience.

    • 18.1 per cent of ace respondents said sharing their ace identity had a negative impact on their care, with the researching finding these issues were principally in reproductive health – such as smear tests – and having their asexuality assessed as a mental health condition.

  • I like using mods. At the very least, I couldn't go back to not using things like Magic Storage.

Recently finished making a Soul of Eternity in Fargo's Soul mod using Calamity + Thorium + DBZ + Soul mod DLC fork. Twas a lot of fun. Maybe will eventually go back and try to get some of the other end-game items, but even equipping just a couple of the precursors to the soul of eternity started causing a lot of lag.

in 1.4 Fargo stopped including Calamity, Thorium, and DBZ items in the Soul of Eternity crafting tree, but others have added that.

  • Most research is somewhere between: scientist has a belief on how something works and does studies that can provide evidence for or against it and competing hypotheses. Doesn't matter if it's super basic science about some obscure bacterial protein that has no known real world implications: often the scientists have a belief before doing the studies. There nothing wrong with that as long as you don't hide data and you are open to being wrong. Aelwero provided no evidence for their claim. If we just accept that "well maybe there lying", we would have to reject all science by that standard.

Of course independent groups should verify results from other studies. But it's boring, non-flashy work that makes enemies and doesn't interest funders. But we should work towards getting more funding to do this. We also should work towards a culture of reporting null data. Not reporting "no difference between groups" can result in a similar problem without anyone intentionally doing it (sorta like the jelly bean xkcd, but with 20 different groups doing the same experiment but only 1 publishes because they didn't know 19 group already tried and found no association and only they did by chance).
