  • There's a common understanding that if you want more activity you need more activity to attract more people. Its a feedback loop that requires engagement. We lurkers know that the best way to help Lemmy grow to a critical mass is to temporarily become active for the sake of fucking over reddit.

  • Make sure to calculate potential net profit vs initial investment cost. The juice may not be worth the squeeze in the long run. Also, those estimations might be calculated based off lab conditions, the real world is not nearly as forgiving to solar panels. Expect not all of them to live full expected life. You are betting that they will last longer than initial investment cost, the electric company is betting that enough people will sign up to this with their own money so that they can lessen their own power consumption to save money (profit!). You are taking a mild risk for a very long term investment that may or may not pay out. They are taking zero risk beyond maintenance fees and making relatively instant profit.

  • Thank you for this! Valuable info I'm sure. I think this might be due to the newest Lemmy software version which not every instance may be updated to yet. As I understand Lemmy.world just updated only a day or two ago. Hope most instances will be green by end of week.

  • Supply side Jesus at it with another classic

  • Not every instance communicates with every other instance in existance. Some instances 'know about' other instances while other instances do not. One instance has to interact with another directly first for them to discover eachother. This is a problem for smaller instances that don't have as much cross interaction going on. Also some instances are blocked such as nsfw depending on the admins set rules for aggregation.

  • She would absolutely come to life and eat your soul if noone was looking

  • This has some clown car energy but for bikes

  • Batman needs to lay off the treats I don't think their belt fits anymore

  • I use chocolate oat milk, its surprisingly good creamer and much cheaper to get a full pint of it

  • Awesome! You did a great job!!!

  • Try the 'tlp' command on whatever distro you end up with. It really help with battery optimization. I'm a big Linux mint fan all of my laptops have always had it never had any compatability or driver issues with mint. Something I would maybe recommend is buying some external thinkpad batteries for the laptop off the internet. Else you can buy a big rechargeable car jumper batter pack with 12vdc car output and a car plug charger for laptop.

  • Just started using it a few mins ago, its awesome! Better than Lemmy I think. I had to use my browsers 'install app' option to get the cloud app on the phone.

  • Hey @smokeydonuts I like your name ;)

  • Yes pretty much most fediverse instances are run by voulenteers on their own hardware time and dime. That is why donations are so important to keep these instances going. Storage space is not cheap and multimedia hosting requires a lot of it.

  • What I would do is upload videos to peertube instance (the peertube servers are better equipped for storing videos and most of them are free + offer more or less unlimited storage) and for pictures use plethora or pixelfied. Lemmy and mastodon are just one aspect of the whole fediverse, there's all sorts of instanced equipped to be all sorts of things https://fediverse.info/

  • Simulation theory is more or less a kind of modern creation myth, and creation myths are based around its societies current level of understanding of the world. In ancient times people explained the worlds actions and existence through gods and imaginative myths. When the scientific revolution happened people explained the universe in terms of immutable laws and cosmic logic. Now we are in the computational revolution, thus some people explain the worlds existence through computers. All untestable and unfalsifiable explanations for the nature of reality are as good as any other, so pick your poison and enjoy!
