That was a great watch, but I think it's actually more simple than that. Content creators want to focus on their content. If it is now considered acceptable to have a mic on camera, hiding it is one less thing they have to deal with while shooting.
I do find it extremely odd to hold a lav mic though. Maybe that's the only mic they own. I donno.

This. Any time you're not sitting at a desk/studio you need some kind of mic. And these new wireless mics work well. Now people are opting to not buy/use the big studio mics because the wireless ones work good enough and go anywhere.

My story is very similar. I used DD-WRT for years until something broke. Then I switched to OpenWRT and never looked back. That was maybe ten years ago.
I knew someone that did this on the regular to knock herself out. But it never seemed like actual sleep to me. Her legs would kick all night. She would toss and turn. The next day, her mental state would be like someone who had not slept at all. I don't know how to explain it but it's like it turned the lights off but everything was still running. I don't think her brain did all the stuff it's supposed to do when actually sleeping.
She suffered multiple injuries from falls while on that stuff too. Trying to go to the bathroom or kitchen etc.
She suffered from severe anxiety and ADHD, so things might be different for someone else.
