  • You should be able to reply to posts via Mastodon. You should be able to see your Lemmy posts in Mastodon. (Although I think that doesn't work yet from lemmy.world, need to troubleshoot). It's good to have a Lemmy and a Mastodon account.

  • Yeah that's weird. They use the same version. (If you have some time and would like to dig into the database... be my guest..)

  • I will watch the costs, and actively ask for donations when needed. But we have some reserve from the mastodon.world donations and also I've already seen Lemmy users donate.

When this server is deleted, the accounts on it go as well. But as with the mastodon server (which has 164000 accounts now) I'm looking to adding levels of admins, of which at least 1 will get 'the keys' (registrar/dns/hosting/OS) for continuity. I have already promised on Mastodon I won't shutdown. If I ever get tired of it I'll transfer to another admin.

  • I don't see too much on the OS level that could cause it. Probably more likely a bad DB query or locking. As I'm a DBA I could look into that, if only I had the time. Bit busy at the moment.

  • On community level

  • I would like to implement a CDN like Fastly or Bunny or whichever to help avoid that. If the site gets really popular, I'm sure we'll get more donations, covering the costs. I've seen that on mastodon.world.

  • Hi, so the 1st and 3rd point sound like something the Lemmy devs should look into, could you submit that at https://github.com/LemmyNet ? The video point: I haven't tested video yet. You could post it on Peertube as a workaround while I try to fix it.

  • Yes it halved it here too, but half of 20 is still 10 seconds which is just too long. But hey, 3.2k users and it's still working so won't complain too much...

  • Well we're in the baby phase now, so most maintenance is ad-hoc. But after that it's a good idea. About redundancy: it's a single VPS. But when the VPS or datacenter breaks, we have a backup, and it runs in Docker so it's just restoring the backup, starting the containers and redirect the DNS

  • Hosted at a Hetzner datacenter in Germany. I am in the Netherlands

  • It's on a VPS so any redundancy they use for storage, plus I make backups to a storagebox in a different datacenter

  • By the way; now it was, I briefly restarted the database.

  • I don't think so... what did you see?

  • These are current graphs for lemmy.world (yet to add it to my Zabbix)

    Diskspace:

    du -sm *
    960	pictrs
    1273	postgres

  • Just by using their software. They have no other involvement in this server.

  • Does it need to win? Can't it co-exist with others? As long as you have enough people to have nice discussions. You can have that with 10 million people, don't need all 8 billion here... Mastodon is still way smaller than other social media, but still I enjoy it very much. There are enough interesting people there to fill my timelines.

  • oooohhh I couldn't fit it in 1 photo.. Also my office is too big a mess.. I'll maybe make a photo when I have some time to tidy up..
