  • Firstly, you do not get to dictate how I engage with this thread. Secondly, right wing and neo-liberal progressive government officials spent the better part of two years concern trolling over china and their vaguely evil intentions with TikTok. Something the US tech monopoly has hardly had to deal with, since they have the privilege of operating within the imperial core. The goal with this rehtoric isn't to ensure privacy for the American people, because of it was, we'd hold Silicon Valley to the same standard. Instead It's to stoke fear over the communist "threat" that is finding its way into your phones like a Trojan Horse.

It's spread wild and baseless conspiracies about political censorship, all the while priming the American people to embrace actual censorship through a ban on the distribution of TikTok. Something you might find on the other side if the Great Firewall of China ironically enough.

America's own social media industry has been caught red handed participating in clear and present evil. From developing eating disorders in young girls. To stoking genocide. Something Zuckerberg was interested in policing both sides of. The evidence of their evil is all around us, they do not even attempt to hide it. Yet curiously, when the media makes similar clames about TikTok, the sources are never revealed or published for consumption. I can go read the internal slide decks of Instagrams conclusion on it's ability to induce eating disorders. If the evidence is so damning, why not publish it? And yet with all this, these corporations walk free with a slap on the wrist, if that.

You should ask yourself, why are American pundents, politicians, and their media apparatus so interested in "protecting" citizens from TikTok? What material interests might drive them to ban a platform that is actively being imitated by nearly every major player in the social media space? Could it be that the lobbyists that line their pockets are more interested in ensuring they maintain their dominance? Or could it be they know that they'll be left out of the game they accuse China of playing? [1][2][3 26% removal rate for US]

The real threat is inside your walls, not on the other side of the ocean.

  • You might want to consider how much they've read too, or what they've read. Find yourself an audio book, I know that's helped me.

  • It's a trip! Full of highs and lows, but, as cheesey as it sounds -- nothing is more rewarding! You'll have sleepless nights, you'll be grumpy, but one day you'll be grumpy and your kid will look at you and say "why you grumpy!?" And snap right out of it. Every time my daughter does that I can't help but laugh. it's almost accusatory in tone! She's a cheeky kiddo.

  • You've seen how Citizen United has led to a deluge of corporate influence on politics right? And you are not sure what the issue could be with allowing Corporations to vote? How about we just skip all these middle steps and just allow the corporations to be elected directly into public office? I'm sure they'll have the average citizens interests at heart.

  • Yes let's not be like reddit:

    • I've looked for the "source" of the leaked guidelines from the Guardian, but I can not find them. They only say that someone from The Guardian has access to these leaks. The rest of the evidence of censorship is anecdotal at best, unless you have a more direct source.
    • Data collection is done by all in app browsers from major social media platforms, not just TikTok. Don't believe me? Then let's ask the guy who wrote the report. What's the name of that report again? Oh it's iOS Privacy: Instagram and Facebook can track anything you do on any website in their in-app browser. Why do none of the hundreds of articles mention that? It should be noted that as of this comment you can open any webpage in your native browser in TikTok. Seems strange to only be talking about TikTok in this regard.
    • Again, this article is citing something they have "obtained" and yet, won't post for the public to consume. Unless you have the information the cnn is reporting on, we can't know for sure what it even says. We know that the employees in question were fired apparently, and that the IP address used to connect to TikTok was viewed, but no information on the intentions and from what I can tell, nothing was published. Regardless, in a linked article from the CNN article, it's mentioned that: Uber was delivering politicians a different version of their app to avoid regulations.. This information should make you outraged, but it won't because the US media has decided this is not something you should worry about. There were no congressional hearings about this, no outrage, no endless news reports.

There is a clear pattern here, and it's one that shows just how little the American population cares about their own country exploiting them. There isn't even clear evidence of exploitation in regards to TikTok. They appear to be engaging in all the same practices as US tech giants. Last I knew, China could just buy your data and use it for their own means. I mean, that's what was happening with the Cambridge Analytica stuff right?

You prevents Cambridge Analytica type events by regulating or abolishing Surveillance Capitalism in the US. Instead the US propaganda network has us talking about ghosts in TikTok's shell.

  • He doesn't need to do that, actual anarchists have done so already, and if you took the time to read any foundational anarchist theory you would know what the definition is.

The only way anarchism has "different definitions to different people" is if they too were not interested in the theory and instead just the label, which is what this meme is about...

If you actually believed in dismantling unjust hierarchies you would understand that all hierarchies are unjust. Like the political hierarchy of the United States.

  • I wonder what kind of phone Lenin has πŸ€”πŸ€”

  • What part of "laws are just threats of violence made by the predominant socioeconomic ethnic group in a given nation and the cops are basically an occupying army" do we not understand?

  • That makes me feel better about this weekend, thanks! Yesterday I was the patient one, we had some success. Today I was not the patient one and we had catastrophic failure. Definitely was feeling guilty. But they bounced back after we decided to pause and was clearly trying to cheer me up. It was sweet. We also have a 1mo, which only compounds the stress πŸ˜….

  • I've never looked into it but does the subreddit simulator guy from reddit open source his code / model? That might be an interesting way to populate an instance and test stuff.

  • Potty training, unsuccessfully. I think we've concluded the kiddo needs more time before jumping in. I've never experienced stress on the levels of a walking talking pee bomb before. I've been on high alert all weekend, and had to call in some backup today. It leaves you exposed.

Whoever you think you are, wait until a toddler is marching around the house with no sense of reason, no diaper (instead, undies), and no bladder control. You'll know just how easy you'll crack under pressure.

It'll come with time I guess.

You really do sacrifice a large portion of your identity for the sake of your kids. But I can't wait until they are able to enjoy the things we enjoy. Until then I am but a humbled Sheppard, working on enjoying the things they currently enjoy.

  • This is very cool, is the bot code published somewhere?

  • Glad I got out when I did. Wish I could convince my employer to do the same.

  • Yes there is a distinction between webPAGE and webSITE. Which is why I used site and not page. I never said they have the URLs, that was you.

I build and maintain networks for a living, so I know what the network operators do and do not have access to.

As a user of any network, you should be walking around under the assumption that every network is hostile.

Regardless, my point still stands. You should have no expectation of privacy when you don't control the system your using. Especially these self hosted federated systems. Let alone a public webform where your sharing your thoughts and ideas and other PII.

    • Don't use repeat usernames across services
    • Don't include your full name
    • Don't include your photo
    • Ditch your account periodically and make a new one
    • Maintain separate accounts for different interests, especially NSFW content.

If you leave a trail of breadcrumbs, you will be found.

Unless the DMs are encrypted using your own keys, your DMs are one SQL query away from being nightly reading material for any instance admin.

That's the leading privacy concern with these systems. You might think your DMs are private, but unless their encrypted, any DBA can read them. You better hope the Admins of your instance have no voyeuristic intentions.

  • I've noticed this too, it's not great lol.

  • "Wants to post on a social media website" "Wants pure privacy on the social media website"

I'm not sure what the issue is here... Did you know that your ISP has a record of every website you've ever been to on a server you don't control and they can look at it whenever they want?

Did you know you leave a record of your device on any network you join, leaving a unique ID behind that can be mapped back to you? This record is stored on severs you don't control and the operatora can view this record whenever they want?

Did you know that the admins of raddle have access to all your comments and DMs?! And they can read them at any time?!

  • You are really missing the forest here. I'm registered on a explicitly Marxist-Leninist instance, where I talk to like minded people. I might want to talk to them about Cats, and only them.

However, I'm subbed to a lot of other communities outside of my instance. My subs are synced with my instance and then show up in the All list on the instance for everyone to explore.

There is a instance explicitly for Starteck, startrek.website, it 3 communities. I'm subbed to their c/startrek and my instances c/startrek and both instances engage with startreks very differently.

This is the strength of Lemmy. It's more likely that over time niche instances will become the norm, where the communities within them are centered around something (a ideology, a brand, a fandom), but because it's federated everyone can connect with everyone if they wish.
