  • I believe it was the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma (2020) that demonstrated exactly this in an experiment with a woman who willingly participated. Researchers showed how browsing data and search history can be used to tell when someone might be more vulnerable or persuadable (she had had a miscarriage during the experiment, which of course was very exposed due to search history), which can then be used to serve ads promoting beauty or health/dieting/fitness products.

  • Fake it til you make it.

If they see no consequences to their actions, it only makes them bolder to go more extreme.

  • I'd also recommend it. There's a lot of great, high quality content from well-known creators with no ads and occasional other perks like early NJB videos.

Wendover did a good video (yt) on the Nebula model and background (Sam's also the Chief Content Officer).

  • I didn't say it was either. Just something to be aware of.

  • A gentle reminder that Edmonton Journal is an American-owned media corporation, part of the Postmedia media conglomerate.

  • I just finished Far Cry 5...Seemed like a fitting time for some cult destruction.

Overall it wasn't too bad. Maybe a 6 or 7 out of 10. I found it getting repetitive after halfway through the second (of three) regions. The side stories weren't very interesting any more, so it was just a little grindy to the end.

I will say, this was one of the few games that got me on the disgust (not sure that's really the right word for it) meter a couple times. No spoilers, but the story Jess Black shares about the cult's doings is quite revolting.

Probably on to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 next for me.

E: One thing I just remembered that was quite well done that I don't often (literally) hear in other games was the quality of sounds coming from afar. A commotion in the distance actually sounded like it was in the distance, and not just a less quiet sound. Some mushed directionality while a little bit of reverb and reflection really made it sound realistic.

  • That should work just fine, as long as it's able to compress a bit and create a seal.

  • Many other demented white men are trying very hard to keep it this way.

  • Another thing while you're working on the hatch: air seal it as well. There are gasketed hatches, or you can install a stick-on gasket for the existing one. Stick it to the attic side (rather than the hatch). You may need to put a 2x2 frame inside the access if there's not much space to stick to.

Air movement can carry a lot of moisture and thermal energy. Insulation isn't very effective when air can just move through/around it.

  • Isn't this where the term pork butt comes from as well? The cut isn't the pig's rear end (it's actually the shoulder), but they were often stored/preserved in these butt barrels.

  • Yeah I'd say the only negative is that I don't really use a whole lot of data, so I have a bunch left from when they switched pricing (which never expires), but I likely won't use the minimum amount that comes with the annual plan now (150 GB, but rolls over for one year).

I've definitely changed to not be stingy on data though, like watching videos or streams on data now that I have so much.

  • The folks on ecomodder have been doing electric conversions for a long time (along with other hypermiling mods), but there are a few more dedicated conversion kits out there today that take some of the DIY out of it, at least on the equipment procurement side.

  • You could do a quick comparison with the kgCO2e/kWh of each grid. I believe Germany recently transitioned to natural gas from nuclear, so they probably have higher grid emissions than you'd expect.

  • Shouldn't one also care about non-fatal head injuries? Of course a helmet isn't going to help against a high speed vehicle collision, but i would very much like to avoid things like skull fractures or concussion if i could.

  • And their low-cost, bring your own device spinoff Lum (which is fantastic, btw).

  • I use this method for beef roasts too. Low heat to desired internal temp then blast it before serving for that nice sear on the outside. One thing to limit smokiness is to drain any pan drippings prior to the sear, or just use a new pan.
