  • I don't know the strike rules, but with the WGA possibly still being on strike, and SAG possibly going out on strike, during Comic-Con I'm imagining the panels to consist of non-union background actors who never had speaking roles and aren't in the WGA. Some mild dishing about behind the scenes.

  • Good news. I purchased volume 1, and I'll purchase volume 2. I think Prodigy is fine, but not my cup of tea. However, I can't abide how dirty Paramount+ treated the show, the team, and the fans. To Prodigy fans -- I got your back. To Paramount+ -- sarcastic Vulcan salute.

  • "We wanted to have a place to alert for scheduled maintenance, events, and stuff like that."

Very cool. I have it bookmarked. I don't have a Mastodon account, yet. I've had a Twitter account for years, but I very, very rarely logged on to it. I tend to be verbose (I'm working on it), rather than pithy, a habit that didn't mesh with Twitter.

  • " ... nothing’s impossible for Trek I guess."

So true. It would not be the first, "Well, that's the last we'll see of that character," to "They're back?" Star Trek moment.

  • A movie about Admiral Vance's pre-DSC experiences would be great.

I'd like to see a mini-series about the immediate post-Burn crumbling of the Federation. Tied to how, while much smaller and muted, the Federation still went on.

  • I hope so. I think Hemmer is such an interesting, well acted character, and a chance to further explore the Aenar. I'd love if he were brought back, somehow. Maybe pull a Georgiou with Hemmer. As much as I'm tired of this ruse, I wouldn't mind if they used it one more time. Even just going back to the planet and discovering that as an Aenar, Hemmer survived the harsh environment. But, I'm still wistfully thinking that Sito Jaxa is still around, somewhere.

I haven't started watching SNW season 2, yet. I intended to wait for all or most of the season's episodes to be released, but I feel like I'm losing that battle with myself. So if there's been any mention of Hemmer in season 2, I know about it yet.

My favorite of Bruce Horak's Hemmer art I've seen is "They Took the Ship ..."

  • That was really well done. Nice!

RE: My not being able to upload an image for my avatar. It's not you, it's me. Specifically, it was my browser. I first tried using Firefox, which is the browser I've always used since signing up for startrek.website. Even though I thought I had fully allowed startrek.website on Firefox, I wondered if there was something under Firefox's hood that was the problem. What I love about Firefox can at times be problematic, what with the blocking of this, that, or the other.

So, I just tried again to add an avatar, this time using Chrome. I seldom use Chrome because it is a lot more loosey-goosey than Firefox about giving websites permissions. I was able to give myself an avatar when using Chrome to access startrek.website. I can see my avatar, and everyone else's on Firefox and Chrome. The why of the situation is far beyond my skill set to explain. I'm going with "it worked."

Thank you both for your prompt replies and suggestions. LLAP.

  • That is hilarious and so accurate. Source: me, who despite being here chatting with my Star Trek folks, still does not understand much of nothing about Lemmy. I'm learning, though.

I tried today, just before posting my comment. I tried changing the name of the image, at first the name had spaces and capital letters. I renamed the image without using caps or spaces, but it still didn't work. Below is a screenshot of the error message I got. I'll try using a different image.

edited to add: I just tried using different images and got the same error message.

  • How do I load an avatar for myself? I've gone to Settings --> Avatar, clicked Upload Avatar and selected an image I saved. But then I get the error message, "SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data." I don't know what that means. I'm guessing that I'm violating the parameters of naming an image, and/or maybe the image's size or type? The image I was going to use is a .jpg. My only Fediverse account is this one, on startrek.website.

  • Being the work of bots makes a lot of sense. I'm not a Luddite with social media, but I definitely qualify as a dabbler, i.e. I'm not signed up with most social media sites. I know of bots, and the damage they can do online, but I keep not factoring in bots for something like Star Trek. When I don't like something I spend less time on it, not more.

  • I agree. Star Trek has always been woke. Comments that this is a new phenomena confound me. I have no idea what sort of mental gymnastics are required for such a stance. Star Trek's IDIC happened right under their noses, yet they didn't notice. TOS by today's standards may not be considered as pushing boundaries. At the time it was broadcast, TOS put out some radical ideas. No more wars between countries on Earth. An end to racism. Uhura and Sulu as part of the command staff on the bridge. Dr. Richard Daystrom was portrayed by William Marshall, a Black actor. Majel Barrett's Number One in TOS's "The Cage" was no a damsel in distress. There are other examples in TOS, too. Subsequent Star Trek series continued and expanded on IDIC with the series stars, guest stars, and stories. But, still there are those who think Star Trek "suddenly" went woke?

Sometimes I think that referring to Star Trek as being suddenly woke is just a dog whistle. But then I'm back to what Star Trek any folks using that term were watching in the first place.

  • Would Abraham Lincoln and Surak be on team Starfleet, like in TOS' "The Savage Curtain" (s3e22)? Would everyone enter a fight suit that would join together into a giant fighting robot that has a shiny Starfleet insignia on it? Justice League of Starfleet. I just can't.

  • I don't remember this, but I like the commercials. "Tune in and Prosper."

  • I'm just flabbergasted by the situation. I can't think of a worst way for Paramount+ to have handled things. Prodigy gets good word of mouth. Prodigy's physical media release is done using the cursed method of splitting the season into volume 1 (episodes 1 to 10) with volume 2 to be released in the future. Hasn't happened yet. Prodigy is greenlit for a season 2. Prodigy is cancelled. Prodigy season 1 is removed from Paramount+ a few days after the announcement. Season 2 is waves hand around, getting finishing touches, and it's availability for viewing to be determined, maybe never. I'm getting mental whiplash.

At some point, customer satisfaction and loyalty (to Star Trek; peripherally to Paramount+) should be greater than how many nickels a company can squeeze from a penny.

  • " ... Picard had completed an emotional arc that would allow him to save the day in the penultimate moment of Se3."

I agree. I think Seven's emotional arc continues and concludes in PIC season 3. She kept the field commission Picard granted her in PIC season 2. Starfleet honored Seven's status as Commander, but to me it also seemed passive aggressive in assigning her to a ship with a traumatized from the Battle of Wolf 359, Borg-hating captain - Shaw. I wonder if Seven's assignment to the Titan-A was done by someone who disliked Seven, Shaw, or both of them.

The knowledge of the events in PIC season 2 does give watching TNG a new perspective.

  • "Your griefs, your pains, fix you to moments in the past long gone. You’re like butterflies with your wings pinned."

I think this is the theme of PIC season 2, and not just for Picard. Processing and accepting the impact of past choices and actions in the here and now. Seven expressing the impact of her post-VOY treatment by others. Raffi admitting to herself that she holds too tightly to those who are important to her in the now because of her fear of loss based on past experiences. Her loss of: Starfleet; her credibility because of her theory about the sythn attack on Mars; and, herself and her family due to her addictions afterwards. Rios' moment of growth when he moves on from always feeling adrift since the events on the Ibn Majid. Agnes and the Borg Queen bonding over shared feelings of loneliness. A strange combo, but one I think Alison Pill and Annie Wersching's strong performances completely sold.

I think PIC season 2's overarching story is muddled because the separate parts seem related more by happenstance rather than being a solid, cohesive narrative. However, I think season 2's theme is always strong, and it resonates with me.

One of the things I love about Star Trek is when it makes me think about how I think. PIC season 2 has me doing a lot of self-reflection. I enjoy, and re-watch, PIC season 2.

  • The Vidiians' appearance as an amalgam of bits and pieces (literally) of other species is genius, and well done. Danara Pel (VOY s2e19 "Lifesigns") is the Vidiian I remember as being nuanced and sympathetic. In "Faces" (VOY s1e14), the Sulan hearts Torres scene haunts me.
