  • The data doesn’t back your idea. Since 1950 (the beginning of this dataset) China has had a negative Net Migration rate. More people have chosen to leave China even accounting for others that choose to come to China.

I'd like to believe that, anecdotally I've seen a number of engineers head back because they felt they could leverage their skills where they were the one-eyed in the land of the blind.

You really should want to leave though, Xi is not subtle in his desire to control all aspects of Chinese life.

  • While I would agree here, I think they will still choose their money right now.

The richest will definitely consider leaving, but I think the choice between life and money right now still leans toward money unless you can feel safe getting money out.

There have been high-profile people losing that bet, but my exposure suggests the frogs haven't yet reached the jump point, though there is a lot of fidgeting.

  • Because it was a lost culture war issue then, now they're the winners and everyone who disagrees with them is on the weak side.

That's like saying "why would black people do worse in the south once reconstruction was ended, they still had the amendments?", which is true, but basically meaningless in reality, you've made it clear you can't enforce anything.

These people now know that if they do commit vigilantism, it will go through local and state courts, probably be upheld under some excuse that they were "protecting life", and finally if it got to SCoTUS potentially pass because of Dobbs.

  • It's because buyers are getting desperate, demand is huge, the banks hope the sellers will take a haircut to sell and they can take the margin in interest.

It's been a while since capital has felt this powerful, cash has been cheap for so long, they want to see what they can do with this.

This is very much a Jesus consent meme with the banks saying 'I don't!'

  • I disagree, their parents went through so much worse and they saw China rise, the belief is if they can stick through just a little they might find a new opportunity, or maybe things will just work out.

Also they don't think things are magically better elsewhere, so maybe it's just that.

For us the price might not make sense, but I understand if it does to them at least.

  • That's funny, I didn't.

I was young X, and we were brutally bulled and abused by Boomers.

The problem is: The boomers were idiots, they never had to learn anything, things were simple, the economy was good, why would they have to think, their parents gave them everything on a silver platter.

The GG were awesome btw, learning from them was like learning from wise elders, especially in engineering. The problem was Boomers didn't understand anything but were so overconfident that they actually knew everything, and when you tried to explain to them where they were wrong they considered it an attack and again went full metal Karen.

  • Lower voltage and density, also they're considered lower quality because they're cheaper.

Basically we'll move over as EVs continue to spread, they make more sense especially wrt cobalt, but for the first versions they seem like you're being ripped off with inferior technology, that connotation will fade over time.

  • I want to see AI papers compared to today, we basically tore the guts out of everything, I don't even think most of Minsky is applicable anymore (perceptrons particularly have been replaced with vector meshes from word2vec).

  • Yeah, but the state board SHOULD protect them, at least until the inbred good ol boys pass more laws saying a fetus is a 100% viable legal human at conception and until they're born there's no way they could ever die because God would never let a baby die and if you disagree it's because you're a satan worshipping baby murderer and this is intent.

Their politicians are... They're evil, but at the same time they don't understand how they could ever be wrong about anything, so the logic goes down all kinds of narcissistic corridors.

  • Having grown up in Tennessee, they absolutely will be punished.

They will be shunned by society, they will be attacked privately for even being rumored to have assisted in an abortion.

Pastors, politicians, will spread stories that a doctor participated in an abortion, and that will lead to 'vigilante justice'.

On the plus side, there will be some minority of doctors who give appropriate medical care anyway, no matter the repercussions.
