  • Europe had practical seafaring since antiquity. European naval technology during the discovery of the Americas was on par with other Eastern Hemisphere naval powers.

The naval technology empowered the discovery, but it isn't like Europe was special at the time.

Also, it still took a while to bypass the Silk Road. Even when Europe did, it still ran into an issue that China wouldn't trade for any European manufactured goods, just gold and silver.

  • A lot of working class people create favor networks as a way to collectively perform tasks while still benefitting from the division of labor. This activity is seen going back to prehistoric times.

Money has become a means of exchange to denote those exchanges, but division of labor has been a hallmark of humanity.

  • I think that a lot of the arguments regarding why Europeans did better compared to near peers goes to variations in social differences between Europeans and other near peer civilizations.

It also includes the destruction of extended clan networks, independent universities, and higher wages for Europeans compared to others parts of the world.

  • Vikings were colonizers, though. England was somewhat colonized under the Danelaw and Dublin was founded as a Viking colonizer's stronghold. It just happened to be that Viking colonies in the New World were in Northern Canada, a place where large settlements still don't exist.

  • The history of white skin in Korea is still kind weird though right?

Not as weird as other cultures where lighter skin is preferable. I wouldn't even blame is as a capitalism thing as a lot of cultures have skin whitening/bleaching for centuries.

  • The powermods arent bringing anything unique moderation except a network that allows them to control content for a specific audience.

It depends who. There are some that build tools and procedures for handling large forums. They may also share best practices across different subs.

As for controlling content, it isn't like a corporation or political group can't create 20 accounts and take over subs. That's already happened on Reddit.

Its overall a good thing but the powermods will be replaced with reddit admins doing the ame

Or sock puppet accounts. Banning the current set of mods without a plan on who replaces them doesn't fix the problem.

  • We've seen it in a lot of cases of stochastic terrorism. People end up attacking a symbol that causes them distress. It can be a post office, a school, a politician, or a gay nightclub.

The problem for conservatives now is that acceptable targets have changed to senior executives and conservative commentators. What used to either be an acceptable loss or a tool of fear is now a potential existential threat that they can't quite get back control of.

  • The problem with powermod isn't that they exist, though. Moderation of a large sub is still done by volunteers that have had to hack solutions together because they don't get a lot of support from Reddit. It helps Reddit to have experienced mods overseeing several subs because they bring with them experience on how to handle high profile and large scale moderation efforts. They are a technical talent pool that Reddit relies upon a lot.

The problem is that Reddit has shitty mod governance. It still uses rank by add date and offers no ability for users to kick a mod out except for TOS faults. Reddit doesn't want to fix mod governance issues because it creates a legitimate mod power structure and Reddit doesn't want to give that much power to users, including mods.

That said, Reddit's shitty mod governance was copied directly to Lemmy.

  • Non-founder CEO's typically get brought in to use their connections to improve the company of is an internal promotion to signify the new direction of the company. They also provide a single throat to choke when things go wrong.

What will be more likely to happen is that CEO's will use AI to vibe manage their companies and use the AI output as justification. We don't have enough data to tell if AI helps the best or worst CEO's.
